Time's Up is doing a make-up for the Coney Island Cyclone ride that got cancelled due to rain 2 weeks ago. I've done the Manhattan-Coney ride solo before and loved it, and am really looking forward to this Friday's ride.
the Coney Ride on Friday was lots of fun! there was about 2 dozen people, wide variety of ages, levels, and bikes. average speed was around 8-9mph so I did a lot of fooling around on my bike, coasting, bopping along to some tunes. everyone I met was very cool, especially one dude who schooled me on some track bike knowledge - gotta admit it's more fun to learn about in conversation with a real person than online!
the ride along the greenway past the Verrazano Bridge was the best part, with gorgeous weather and a fantastic view. the fireworks at Coney were also quite a sight - they are almost right above you! the ride back went up Ocean Ave and through Prospect Park, an easy and straightforward trip home. despite the fairly laid-back pace of the ride, or maybe because of it, I was pretty worn out when I finally reached home around 12:30am... I guess the total mileage was around 40 or so, maybe a bit less.
i'm looking forward to participating in more Times Up rides, and I think I will start going to their free classes on bike mechanics. definitely a recommended ride!
...and btw, after this summer, a lot of Coney Island's boardwalk will be torn down for re-development. So if you live in the area and have always wanted to do this ride but not gotten around to it - this summer's you last chance! if you're looking for a route, try this one I did a month ago: http://www.mapmyrun.com/run/united-s...k/328887224796
I did this ride last year with a group of friends. We started with a loop around Central Park, then shot down the West Side bike path over the Brooklyn Bridge and down to Coney Island with a Prospect Park loop on the way back. Fantastic ride! Have a hot dog and a beer on the boardwalk for me. It's a great NYC treat. Wish I were there.
