Philly Bike Expo 2024

When I have posted about this event in the past the response has been ho-hum. I don't know why. It is bike stuff. The stuff we like.

There are a bunch of custom frame builders where even if you are not ready to buy a custom frame, it is good to see what they are turning out.

If your hobby is bicycles, you should go. In the past they had food trucks inside the show and in nearby Reading Market there is more good food and then there is the surrounding neighborhood for more food choices. There are plenty of good stuff here.

I live maybe 2.5 miles away and have found it meh.

Wonder if Engin will be there. I’ve got one sitting in my dining room.

Philly Bike Expo review by Velo Mule

The show is over now. It was well attended to the point that it was difficult to talk to some of the exhibitors. In fact, they were so busy, that there were several that I just gave up on. Part of that is because what I wanted from then wasn't so important. But part of it is because there was just a line of people at most booths.

For me the highlights is seeing hand built bikes by Jeffrey Bock, Brian Chapman, Coast Cycles, Haute, Bishop, Royal H/Hollingsworth, 44 Bikes, Appleman, Artefact, Co-Motion, Dogwood Cycleworx, Favaloro, Significant Other, Fine Bikes, Flatiron Bikes, Mars Cycles, Zabrina Cycles, Momento Cycles, Vicious Cycles, Junkyard Cats (which is a offshoot of Bilenky) Handz Bicycles, Hoff Cycles,Iride, July, Maiorosse and Bilenky.

I only got to talk to Jeffery Bock. I must have gotten lucky. If I had one choice of frame builders to talk to, he would be the guy. The bike he brought with him was beautiful with fenders and racks. The fenders were painted and pinstriped to complement the frame. I also got to talk to Brent at BikeCAD. He was able to restore my account right on the spot. Then he showed me that in addition modeling regular bikes, that double headset cargo bikes are able to be modeled. Awesome, since, unfortunately, a Bilenky cargo bike is out of my budget.

I was hoping for more bike tools. There was Mel Pinto Imports which represent VAR and confirmed that I could still get the pins for my old VAR two pin spanner and of course, sells new VAR tools and other bike related stuff. I picked up a new spoke wrench at the Monolith booth. This is a forged steel working end with full engagement, the style I prefer for working on some of my vintage wheels that can get a little cranky when needed adjustment. The thing that I like about it is the three wings that are more comfortable for fingers than the traditional two wings. This is 3D printed but must be machined/sanded because the touch surfaces are so silky smooth. I think now instead of counting partial turns in quarters, I will be counting in thirds. I haven't used it yet, but it is likely to become my favorite spoke wrench.

The trend that has been going the last few years is Gravel Bikes. A trend that I like because it is a style that similar to the 10 speed bikes that I grew up with.

One great thing about the show is that it's in Philadelphia so there are plenty of good places to eat and visit. We went down Arch St. to get Vietnamese food.

I will be back next year. I would love to do one of the associated rides. Maybe next year.

Below is a 1948 Camille Daudon bicycle. It looks like a modern gravel bike with fenders and lights. This gravel bike trend is pretty neat.

Thanks for the report. I really wanted to go but there was a local bike ride I really wanted to do too. The bike ride won. Next year, hopefully.
