to Poughkeepsie from NYC + NJ
Sharon and I rode up to Poughkeepsie on our tandem on Sunday, and our friend Tony joined us from the upper west side coming over the GWB. We rode up the west side of the Hudson River, which offered some pretty views and variety. At the finish we crossed over to the east side and Tony took the Metro North train home from Poughkeepsie to Manhattan.
Poughkeepsie gets pretty frequent train service, and it's something around 80 (hilly) miles from the GWB by a reasonably interesting route. People do talk about riding up the west side of the river and enjoy the great views on the Storm King Mountain Highway before finishing across the Newburgh-Beacon bridge (another great view) to the Metro North station in Beacon.
But north of that there aren't those great river views. So what can motivate riding farther to Poughkeepsie? - (other than "Because it's There", as the last train stop on the Hudson line).
I'd be glad for some more ideas to try.
For now, Sharon and I have focused on the fruit orchards and vineyards a little inland on the west side, roughly around Marlboro and Milton. Here's one way we've found to sample those from Newburgh to Poughkeepsie, which we rode again last weekend:

And though I assume lots of riders know how to get from Bear Mountain to the Storm King Mountain Highway and Newburgh-Beacon bridge, here's one way we've ridden that section:

Sharon and I had started early in the morning in New Jersey, and rode to Piermont to meet Tony -- turned out it was easier to ride from northern NJ to Piermont than we expected. Then instead of just riding north on rt 9W to Bear Mt, we took the river road to Nyack, later some other roads down by the beach around Stony Point.
What we didn't like: the wind from the north was stronger than the forecast we'd seen. (I guess there's an obvious answer to that.)

(Sharon and I thought our tandem would be too big to take on the train, so we had put our car in Poughkeepsie the night before after visiting upstate and took the train home then with just ourselves -- so after the ride we put our tandem on the rack on our car and drove home.)

Then even though we weren't going across to the Beacon train station, we rode out into the middle of the Newburgh-Beacon bridge just for the big view south to the river going thru the gap in the mountains, then back to the west side to ride north thru the orchards.
