The Department of Transportation (DOT) will begin the 2009 phase of the Park drives resurfacing project next week. They plan to mill and pave Central Park South and the East Drive from 60th Street to 110th Street between Monday, July 13 and mid-September.
DOT crews will mill sections of the roadway each Monday and Tuesday night. They will then pave each Wednesday and Thursday night. Paving may continue on Friday nights in cases of inclement weather. All sections of rough road will be paved by Saturday mornings at 3:30 am at the latest.
The tentative schedule follows.
Week 1 – Monday, July 13 – Friday, July 17
Central Park South between 5th Avenue and 8th Avenue and Grand Army Plaza
Weeks 2, 3, 4 – Monday, July 20 – Friday, August 7
The East Drive between 72nd Street and 60th Street – Crews will work south from 72nd Street
Week 5 Until Completion – Monday, August 10 – mid-September
The East Drive between 72nd Street and 110th Street – Crews will work north from 72nd Street
There will be rough road on sections of the East Drive on weekdays this summer season. Please proceed with caution.

It's a great time to break out your cyclocross bike or just pretend you're riding on cobbles. I've started doing hill repeats on Harlem Hill just so I can avoid that section.

I was there two days ago. They hadn't pained the lanes yet but the macadam on the East Drive up to around the Met was as smooth as you could imagine.

By next week they should be in the hills north of the 3/4 cut off before the hills. So you can at least ride a 3/4 lap the correct way. It's nice to have the boathouse hill nice and smooth finally (though I still loath that "false flat").

Do you mean the 103rd Street Transverse? Oddly enough, you really don't lose than much taking the transverse over climbing Harlem Hill. Maybe 3/10 of a mile and a few raccoon sightings?

I mis-judged the paver's progress. They won't be past the 103rd traverse for at least another 2 weeks. They are taking their time where they are now (in front of the Guggenheim).
