Good question. State law (Ch. 85, section 11B of the general laws) says that a bicycle may use all public ways, except divided express highways that have been posted by public works. Route 9 is a divided highway, and quite busy, but I don't know if it is posted or not. Would Massbike be able to answer?

I ride Route 1 in Dedham, which is quite similar to Rt. 9. I find it a blast b/c the shoulders are really wide. ymmv

Thanks: our office is situated on the section of 9 that has a seasonable shoulder, so that helps. Won't be often, but I want to see if I can do a weekend ride in (I live 140 miles away), commute between hotel and office during the week and then ride home the following weekend, once I am back up to fitness.

Southboro has very nice morning, lunch time and early evening roads around RT. 9. Reality is car drivers aren't looking for cyclists even on the break down lanes. Sunday morning, no worries.
