Bike DC

Bike DC is coming up soon.
May 23.
https://bikedc.net/index.htm

Don't know why they shortened the ride. I liked the climb into NW to that big estate.
Looking forward to biking the GW Parkway.
I'll be marshaling again this year. They may still be looking for volunteers.

I got an email last week that they are still looking for bike marshalls. I've signed up to ride with my wife, so don't know if I'll volunteer this year.

Short of the gee whiz factor of riding on the GW Parkway, Key Bridge, and Whitehurst (which was actually worth doing, once), I really didn't think much of this ride. Or perhaps I should say, instead, that I had the completely wrong set of expectations. I was hoping for a nice spin. It was a promenade. Probably was clear in the literature I didn't read.

The whole single lane mob multi U-turn thing on the GW pretty much sucked the life out of it for me. It was a lot of folks packed into a shaky little peloton without much room to find your own groove. Too many 7mph riders 3 abreast, kids riding way left, etc. It was nicer in some of the other areas where you could widen out to move at your own speed.

All that said, I am glad to say there weren't too many ridiculous racer wannabes zipping in and out of the families and noobs. That was a positive.

I thought the rain might have made the crowd a little more hard core. Perhaps the 7:30 crowd was a bit more brisk. I got moving closer to 8.

In past years they had started the "family ride" later than the main ride. Used to do the route around Capitol Hill, the Armory, the Waterfront, Mass Ave, sometimes went up to the Cathedral. Only the "hard core" riders did the GW Parkway.

I was supposed to marshal, but I was fighting off a cold and ended up missing the ride. With the rain in the early morning I didn't want to chance getting really sick.

I guess we missed you as a marshall, but we had a fair number, even another with a Moots. Lots and lots of flats this year. Helping someone who went down in one of the storm grates by Roosevelt Island made my partner and I miss the close off time for heading north on the GW.
