Perkins Tower, Bear Mntn NY

Hello!

Has anyone recently rode up to the Perkins Point Lookout tower in Bear Mountain?

If so, how difficult a ride would you say it was? About how long is it?

Thanks!

If you mean Perkins Drive only, from the NYCC website
https://www.nycc.org/resources/re_regional_grades.html
Its 2.1 miles at an average grade of 6%. Not too difficult.

Perkins itself is only 2 miles, but depending upon which side you come from you have to climb either 1 or 2.4 miles just to get there.

They are all steady climbs though, no crazy jumps in pitch like Gate Hill for instance.

Since you are considering it, you don't appear to have any aversion to hills.

Assuming your gearing isn't nutty high, just do it. If you need to stop midway, it would be easy to do that.

I've never done that but I'd be more concerned with going back down

No, that's not a problem. The grade isn't that severe. It's easy to go slow and you can use the whole lane (there isn't a lot of traffic).

That doesn't mean people can't run into problems (if they aren't being careful) but it's an easy descent.

I'd say that there's more chance of getting into trouble on Seven Lakes Drive east bound to 9W. This road is much straighter and with a better surface but there are a few short-radius turns that require some care.

Gate Hill road is much steeper than Perkins and has cross traffic at the bottom.

Perkins Memorial Dr. is a "pleasant" consistent grade climb. From the 9W south entrance to Bear Mountain Park, getting to the tower was about 4 to 5 miles. Very easy to just pace yourself and get to the top for a great view of the surrounding natural area.

I was also worried about going downhill but traffic is minimal, and the roads are smooth. Combining to make once again, a "pleasant" experience.

Enjoy your ride

DONE.

20 minutes to the top on my Bianchi Avenue. I needed those granny gears. Going to try it again on my CAAD9 5 next time. I would not call it an easy climb, seems like way more than a 6% grade. Oh well. Thanks for the responses.

No one said it was going to be "easy" (it is a mountain, after all). There are places in the area that have steeper grade (Perkins is not particularly steep).

Since you are planning on doing it again, it can't have been too hard!

Keep climbing!
