I am a seven month resident of Cape Cod, who wants to return to distance cycling, using an 88 Nashbar mountainbike that will be sent up from Jacksonville, FL in the next couple of weeks or so.

Currently this bike is equipped with 26x 1.25 inch street tires with presta valved tubes, roadbike gearing, and friction shifting.

Yes, I am a RetroGrouch.

I need to hear from people who have bicycled The Cape before regarding equipment, especially tire sizes, etc., that best suits this terrain.

Addendum.

I spent most of yesterday doping it out, doing online research, going back over my 41 years of cycling experience, and I've got it worked out.

I do not like cycling on the cape that much. Some stretches are really nice! However, there is a lack of suitable roads in certain parts.

Depends on what you call 'suitable roads'. I've cycled tank trails in Kansas right alongside speeding armored vehicles, fire trails in Montana, gone cross country many times on this bicycle.

From what I've seen in eight months here, the Cape offers a LOT of cycling opportunities, and the roads are some of the best I've encountered in forty one years of bicycling. So far as traffic goes, a real bicyclist, who follows the rules of the road and maintains a 360 degree watch, as I do, has nothing to fear anywhere, much less on the cape.
