Oyster Bay - Planting Fields Arboretum

I was tipped off to this place and I'm thinking of taking a ride out there. A review on Yelp mentioned no bikes allowed and no bike racks seen. Anyone familiar w/ the place care to comment?

I wasn't going to respond to your post because I didn't feel qualified; however, being that you received 0 replies, I will at least tell you that the ride out to Planting Fields is a very nice one, albeit somewhat hilly if you're not a fairly decent roadie. I can't imagine that there's any riding allowed at Planting Fields itself.

They have a bike rack at the entrance both and you have to walk the rest way. Nice place to ride to yes some hills.

Hills? Forget it. OK, maybe later this summer when I'm in better shape. Thanks for the info!

Was just out there over the weekend. Beautiful area to ride, definitely no bikes allowed in the Planting fields itself - they stopped me at the gate. But the area is hilly-ish, rolling w/ lots of tree cover. I don't know if the hills are so bad I wouldn't go there, but I'm not sure of your fitness level....

My hill climbing fitness sucks. I can handle bridges and stuff like the 5bbt, but not up and down hills all in a row for miles.

Then you probably want to avoid the north shore of Long Island. The area we're discussing is literally in my backyard, yet I avoid it like the plague until I am at least 3-4 months into riding shape, IF I ride it at all.

That settles it. I'll take the LIRR and ride from the station. Doesn't avoid the hills, but at least it's not a 30 mile slog each way.

Good for you, jyossarian! I didn't want to stop you from trying a ride that might end up being a lifelong memory. However, given your comments about your climbing fitness, I think you might find the ride a little more challenging than v70cat makes it sound.

No matter, go out and do it - and let us know how it was!

Short easy climb up Oyster Bay-Glen Cove Road when you come from Oyster Bay. 5BBC used to run a ride there --not in recent years as that leader has moved. But I also recall they locked the bikes somewhere near the entrance and walked over from there. Just note on weekends there is, uh, occasional service on that line. Maybe you consider to ride out and train home if the legs are weak.
