NYC/Westchester Cyclists
Am going to a conference in Manhattan and want to bring my bicycle. I will be near central park and can cycle in the morning. I will take the Metroliner from Boston to NYC and can take my boxed bike. So I can get it into NYC> The final challenge is to get me and my bicycle to Goldens Bridge in Westchester via Metro North. Can one take a bicycle on the commuter train?
Thanks in advance.

Metro North and Long Island RR you need to buy a one-time $5 pass. you can buy it on the train, and sometimes they don't ask for it.
the MTA (Subways) you can just bring your bike on the train.
in either instance i recommend going to either the first or last car.
btw, if you have a chance to ride in central park, you really should. I don't think there's any racing this weekend, so if you get there early on any morning (best is between 5-730) you can get serious training in. after that don't expect to fast

The path along the West Side Highway is spectacular, when it isn't too crowded. Early morning is good. It is accessible at 125th Street, 59th Street, & a few other places. You can take it north to the little red lighthouse under the GW Bridge (and past it), or south to Battery Park, then around the tip of Manhattan & up the East Side to the 50s, where the path disappears and you have to use the streets to get back to where you started, or, of course, turn around.
Try to pick up a NYC cycling map: it is free.

Thank you all!
I am staying with family on the Upper West Side (90th and Broadway) so will have easy access to the park. Early morning rides should be fine and one evening ride with an old friend and mentor from many years ago.
I will be sporting the UMaine long sleeve Black Bear bike jersey on an old cromoly Lemond transformed into a single speed........no racing just pleasure riding......if you see me, say hey.

One last dumb question: The conference is on 103rd and CPW.........I guess I shouldn't leave the bike locked outside during the conference? I should just bring it into the blding? My recollection of living in NYC is that anything will and can be stolen WAAAY faster than one would think.........
I lived in NYC from '78 through '89. Though I love the city I don't miss how much work everything is........

I suggest you call ahead to make sure you can bring the bike into the building.
And by the way, please note you have restricted hours on the Metro north for bikes.

Look at NYC Transportation Alternatives site. There may be a link to garages that allows bicycles.
If it can be stolen, it will be. If you cant get to Goldens Bridge, take the #6 train to Pelham Parkway and ride the paths out to
Orchard Beach & City Island. From there Shore Road to New Rochelle & Rt1 to Rye (Rye Playland)

I chose to borrow my uncle's bike for my west side highway ride with a good friend.
I am now seriously thinking of either a folding bike, a surly Travel check type bike or having a frame builder in New England take my ss and put couplers on it so I can fit it into a suitcase for travel.
Thanks everyone. Biking in NYC was fun.....
