HELP! Bike Shop Recommendation Brick NJ area.

    Hello all,

Last year I got back into cycling. I have an old ball bike I actually won in a BMW rally my wife and I did. Its a BMW Cruise bicycle. It has lots of good equipment from Sram and such. They sold new for about $850. It needed to be set up since it wasn't getting into the largest cog on the front gear set. I took it to Beacon Cycles in Freehold NJ on a recommendation. They had the bike for two weeks, called and said it was ready to go. I picked it up, took it back home and rode it. It was like they never touched it. I called them back and said it still didn't shift right so they said bring it back.

Two days later, I get there, the guy who does the repair work was out but the kid at the counter said he will do it for me. He clamps it onto the stand and does the adjustments. He said to me "are you sure we did any adjustments?" - That made me feel good that I drove 30 minutes each way and paid money for nothing, then had to go back again for this kid to say it looks like nothing was done. After he gets done, I rode it around the lot and it seemed to be fine. After I got home, It still wasn't right. Since this was towards the end of the year and I wasn't riding a whole lot, I figured I would bring it back the next time I was in the area. Now its June and I never went back. If they couldn't get it right the first two times, there is no way I am going back.

Another quick story about this shop that happened before the bad tune up story. I was interested in a bike computer. The counter guy there (different employee) said if I buy one, they will install it for free. When I went back with the bike a different person was there and said he doesn't install them and I would have to come back, but there is a charge for this. I bought it and just did it myself.

What the heck is going on with this shop? If you go on their website, it sounds like they are well known and one of the top places to bring your bike. They seem to be in the loop but then when you go onto the store, everyone's story is different, stories change, and the service is less then stellar.

So now you know the background info, can anyone HIGHLY recommend a bike shop in the Brick area? I know there is Brick Bikes and Shore Cycling Sports just opened up. I know nothing about these places. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

It's a bit of a drive but the Peddler in Long Branch has always done really good work.

Thanks for the recommendation. I completely forgot about that place. I don't mind the 30 minute drive if they actually know what they are doing. Thanks.

If youThe Peddler is a really great shop, everyone that I've talked to there really knows what's up and are very helpful. I've been to the Brick Bicycle shop and they're also very helpful but I haven't had any repairs done on my bike there. If you want another alternative there's Glendola bikes in Wall off Belmar Blvd and also Cycle 54 on 35 in Wall too.

It's really not that hard to adjust the limit screws for derailleurs. Look at the manufacturer websites for instructions. IDK why they don't supply it with the bike, it would be easier and we'd have something to scan and put up for others to see.
It could also be you just need to tighten up the slack in the cable just as you would for your brakes. When adjusting, do a quarter turn of the screw at a time and keep track of how much you've turned so you can undo what you might have made worse. If it shifted into 1st when you tried it at the shop maybe the cable is still a bit stretched or you went from low to high fast and it was easier to get on the sprocket. Also, if you're in the highest gear in the front, you're really not supposed to go into the lowest gear in the back.

I went for a 10 ride on Sunday and this time it slipped right into the largest chainring on the front. Three weeks ago, it seemed like it was held up on something. Obviously its right on the edge of being right. I am going to take your recomendation and see if I can do the final adjustment myself first.

Thanks for all of your help and recommendations. I will check out the shops and see which one I feel most comfortable with for future needs.

Today I went to Brick Bikes after talking with a customer of mine who said he goes there from time to time to get his and his wifes Giants tuned. I had them install the Bike computer I got from the other place last fall that I wound up not installing my myself. $10 and 10 minutes later I was installed ready to go. The most important thing I was able to hang out and see what they did, how many other customers come in and for what. Seems like they do a lot of service work. There was one guy there who has been cycling since the 70's and basically told me this is the best place in the area for repair work and other stuff. So lets see how this works out but so far I am happy with the results and they are 4 miles from me, I can ride there if I want.
