Unoffical Bikeforum North Central Rail-Trail Ride

From a thread that I hijacked over in the touring section we've found a group that is interested in a un-supported (IE: no sag or drink locations) group ride on the rail trail that runs from Ashland Road parking lot in MD to York, PA

The tentative plan is to start in Hunt Valley, MD/Ashland Road starting point and run north toward PA with the option to turn around at any point you see fit. Its a nice gradual uphill to PA and then of course downhill back so that helps. With a lunch/dinner at the end? Plenty of great places and my favorite brick and mortar store REI in Timonium, MD

Link to Google Map
https://maps.google.com/maps?q=Ashlan...&z=17&lci=bike

Speed would be a trail ride pace of say 9-12 MPH?? or ride your pace and distance and meet at predefined checkpoints?

Dates? Maybe July 23rd or 30th? I'm busy all Saturday's in August but after labor day would work as well.

Bottom line post here if interested. and we'll come to a date and just ride!

You should note that there are plenty of "unofficial" places to get a drink along the NCR. People leave a cooler and a money jar out, so just help yourself and leave money for what you took in the jar.

Okay I am over here now

Seeing how I am going to be towards the north end of the trail, maybe some of us could start on the York end and ride south and meet in the middle?

Is there any camping on the South end of that trail? I might be able to link up with the Heritage Trail that starts in York, ride it down the day before then ride back up trail...or?

I made it over also.
Either the 23rd or the 30th would be good for me. If had I my druthers I would opt for the 23rd though. But I am flexible and will be OK with what ever date that fits the most people.
Mike, I was glad to read your comments on the other tread about using your LHT on the trail. As that is what I will be riding.

July 23 sounds like a target date to me, hopefully I will have something touristy put back together. Anybody have any clues on the minimum tire width that will work? My expedition tour bike runs 1.5" so I am sure that one would be fine. My "road" tour bike runs 32mm I think.

Barry good point on the water and there are plenty of stores in the York end.

Alright I'm going to pencil in the 23rd as well.

Aaron not sure about camping in the south end but I'll look into it. we could meet in York and carpool to the other end as well I could fit 4 or 5 in the truck with bikes and gear.
I'd say 32's are about the smallest I'd want to run. I have the stock 37s on the LHT and that works ok but not sure I'd want to go smaller.

Carpool would work. I only have a 2 bike rack on my Honda (company car). Camping is not a major issue. I checked and there are a couple of hotels that I have points for on the south end. Tires currently on the Giant Excursion are 35's, so I might need a quick tire swap. I have a second slightly larger Excursion coming in from my brother in the next week, I have no idea what condition or how it is currently equipped. I also just ordered what should be the last of the parts to get my Giant Iguana back together. That would probably be the better bike for a RtoT.

If we wanted to ride slow enough I probably could make it on the city bike

The only camping I know of is just south of the PA border a few miles from the trail. Warm Showers might have people on either end willing to put you up.

Well it looks as if the 23rd is the preferred date. I just plugged it into my calender. Now we need to start fleshing out the details. I will be driving up from Southern Maryland. If anyone needs to hitch a ride just let me know. I like the idea of shuttling from which ever end is decided upon as the starting point.

Well so we have the 23rd as the date now do we want to do AM (cooler) or PM and then lunch or dinner.

I'd say we start at the south end and go north its "uphill" and the ride back will be slightly easier then have lunch when we get back that way is someone wants to turn around early they can and meet the rest at lunch/din spot at the south end where there are far more choices to eat. (I can recommend a few)

I can fit 3-4 people in the Frontier Crew Cab and at least 6 bikes (2 on roof rack and 4 on hitch mount) so I would be willing to meet a the north end and carpool to the south end for the start and back to the north at the end of the ride. I'm thinking parking at north end would be somewhere on 83 and not right by the trail let me know if you want to hitch a ride and I'll keep a head count.

I like starting from the South end as it's perfect for me. I am thinking that a AM start is a wise choice. My next question would be what time do we want to meet and roll out?

If we ride at about 10mph we can cover the 20 to the PA line and back in about 4 1/2 hours or so....we can do whatever mileage the group wants.. and to give the folks coming for farther away a chance to get there without getting up in the middle of the night I"m thinking 9am and hope to be at a lunch place around 2:00pm depending on the group. I have a rack and bags so I can carry food/supplies for a few people to snack along the trail if needed... trust me I know I won't go hungry :-).

Anyone want to meet at the Galleria Mall off rt 30 or maybe the Giant on Pauline Dr off exit 16 of 83 to carpool down? I'll drive...room for 3 or 4 more...

Gotta look those places up. My schedule just got shot to hell; I may have to head to WV next week so may not get a chance to pick up another bike. The one I have with me is a 7 speed city bike, upright IGH...with bags.

I stopped near Cockeysville for lunch today, wherever that new Chic-Fil-A is near the light rail. Transport to and from is less of an issue for me.

Thanks Mike,
My schedule is still in a flux at this point. Did not have to go to WV, but may be headed for Iowa that week! Got love management sometimes...

I am 6'-2" tall with long arms and legs. My typical road bike is a 60-64cm depending on the geometry. But thanks for the offer.

The predicted heat does not thrill me. But I am game and my hat is still in the ring.

This IS the trail to ride in the heat. Well shaded with a few rivers/stream for taking a dip. Bring your speedos It's 10-15 degrees cooler on this trail. Enjoy your ride. Charlie

Mike,
I am shooting to be at the Ashland parking loot by 08:30. A cool dip along the way will be just what the Dr ordered. Me and speedos weren't made for each other either. It fact if I were to wear one passerbys would be in danger of splitting a side by laughing so hard. I don't have enough post count to send PM's yet. But I left a visitor message on you profile with my contact info.

Hey guys - I just found this thread today, July 23, too late to join you! If you do this again, I am in. I live real close to the Monkton and Whitehall parking lots, and I have a place where a few people can camp primitive style in my woods about 8 miles from the Monkton lot. I just posted in the "people from Maryland" thread just before I discovered this thread. Damn, it was a hot one today. I'll check this thread later to see if somebody updates it after the ride.

Yup we survived... was just myself and Poppabear for this ride. Met right around 9am and hit the trail just after the rain ended. Both our bikes LHT's btw are very dirty from puddles and I learned I will need the front fender on when riding the C&O/GAP in two weeks I normally keep it off since my roof bike rack doesn't allow it to stay on.

We stopped at Monkton for water and a break and started the climb to the line. Made it there just after 11 and turn around for the ride back. I had wanted to get into PA but I had a time limit due to afternoon tubing in Harrisburg area. With the rain in the morning cooling things down and the shade the ride wasn't to hot, the last mile or so was more in the sun and did get hot. Wouldn't want to stop in the sun to much.

I know I had a good time and was great to cover 40 miles with another LHT and rider.

Let me see if I can get a couple pictures in.

One shows the rain after it had mostly moved passed and the other is Me(left) and Poppabear(right) at the end of the 40 miles.

BTW not a very good Verizon signal at the Ashland rd trailhead as you can see on my android smartphone.

Xrayzebra you are more than welcome on the next one. Might be a bit since I've got a busy summer.
