Hi Everyone,
I'm moving to New Jersey soon and I have an idea for a ride I wanted to do in the next month or so:

The idea would be to go from P.Boro, where I'll be living, and take a few days to see the state, stay a few interesting places, get some good riding, and see some interesting sights. The only question I have, is does this seem like a bad idea? Moreso, is it too dangerous due to vehicles or are these routes pretty much ok? I think most of the routes are Rails to Trails.

There's some decent riding on the shore, but Atlantic City is kind of a dump.

Bucks County PA is pretty nice, Peapack / Gladstone is good.

I moved to plainsboro last spring, and let me tell you that you are in luck - the trails, roads, and paths around here are an omnivorous cycling delight.

The main problem with riding as a newb out here is that it can be difficult to stick the back roads without either being overwhelmed by route changes every 2 miles or getting stuck on the shoulder of a major highway. The CR's can go from perfect biking to narrow speeding-car traps to highways all in a couple miles.

Have you looked into the Princeton Freewheelers? Its not my thing personally, but they stretch down into PA & have a good local knowledge base.

I would recommend cutting over to Ocean Grove (when I find a good alternative to 33 I'll let you know, this is my next 'big trip' idea) - its a very bikeable town, only 30-40 miles away, and your already on the coast.

I would also recommend using the D&R canal - its a great way to get north, south, and into PA while sticking near bike-friendly roads.

The problem with the AC/Ocean City area is that it seems to be either heavily trafficked urban roads or highways. Sandy-hook, though, has alot of local bikers and local routes.

+1. Head for Hunterdon and Warren Counties. Was just riding up there on Saturday. The shore towns of S. Jersey are extremely crowded this time of year. MY GF's father owns a house in the north end of Avalon. A few Saturday's ago he cancelled a trip heading south through town because the traffic was too bad. Unless you get up early and got for a ride, you are going to have to deal with it. And most people are in a hurry.

AC is a dumps 365/24/7.
