Touring from Bar Harbor to Burlington - HELP!

Hi all -
I am a newbie to this forum, though I've been reading it (and cycling!) for a while.

My BF and I taking our first touring trip - biking from Bar Harbor, ME, to Burlington, VT (well, actually to Plattsburgh, NY, for a wedding, but we can figure out a route from VT to NY). We have everything we need ... except a good route.

Can anyone give any ideas about roads to take/miss, spots to visit/skip, etc.? Any advice would be helpful. I have family in Hallowell, ME, that we'd like to visit and I've heard that the Kancamagus Highway in NH is a don't-miss.

Thanks,
Sarah

No experiences with this, but I would suggest re-posting in the Touring forum.

Note that as I have read on other questions of this type, Rt1 tends to be a very busy road and while there's no great choices from BH to Ellsworth to Bucksport, maybe at that point find an alternative heading SW. Note as well that the Kancamagus also gets very busy in the summer and while a pretty ride, also takes you a but south to get to, as well as dumping you out in Lincoln, NH, where your choice to head NW all then take you up some nice hills.

well you probably want to take the Burlington-Fort Kent ferry or perhaps the Grand Isle Plattsburgh ferry unless you have the time to ride around Lake Champlain...

118/112 out of Lincoln does indeed go up and up and up, around Mt Moosilauke..

From Montpelier to Burlington:

From BTV you can take the one of the ferries:

Or you can follow a mellow route through the islands:
