Rats Take Liking To Little Red Lighthouse Under George Washington Bridge

https://newyork.cbslocal.com/2011/08/...ington-bridge/

Apparently, rats have taken a liking to Fort Washington Park too. Visitors and cyclists take snack breaks at the various picnic tables and scraps end up on the grass. “We’ve got a lot of ‘em. Probably people throw food on the side and that’s why there are so many,” John told 1010 WINS’ Al Jones.

That's why I sometimes sit on top of the picnic tables when I'm there. They don't only come out at night.

The whole area from the GW to the sewage treatment park overflows with garbage after a nice weekend.

Not just along the river. They're all over Central Park as well. Oh, and then there are the racoons!

Ok.... I'm gonna get crucified for saying this. But on the weekend it appears to be an "ethnic" picnic ground, for lack of a better work. It's like a Puerto Rican hoedown. And I must say - it has to be the most garbage strewn, overcranked, crappy stereo fest in all of Manhattan on Saturdays and Sundays Quite frankly, it's disgusting. I guarantee bikers don't ride with that much garbage and detritus on their bikes. I just don't get it. The rats must love it.

My grandmother used to say, "How can you be so poor that you can't pick up your own garbage?"

It's too bad, because it's actually a really beautiful location on the river.

Took the westside path tonite from midtown to the GW bridge.
Didn't see too much activity by the lighthouse, although I saw
a rat by the 70's and a mouse around the 90's.

I rode on the west side last night from 59th St to the Battery, back to the 90s then down to 59th St again. This was between 10:30 & 11:45 PM. Must have seen 6 rats at least: almost ran one over. This is not unusual: I see them every time I ride in the evenings, no matter where in NYC I go. That rustling sound in the undergrowth you hear when strolling in Prospect Park, Central Park, Washington Square Park, etc? It isn't leprechauns!

One foggy day in December when there wasn't much light I had four rats run between my wheels just north of the playground around W. 148th st. I always worry that one will get caught up in my spokes and make a terrible mess.

yes i am going to crucify you for being an ignorant bastard. WTF does their ethnicity have to do with anything? White folks don't litter? or maybe all the white folks in manhattan are just out littering in the HAmptons on the weekend not on the Hudson. For what it's worth, I get angered by all the litter thats out there too but your out of line to try to single out a particular race when I know for a fact that there are whites, puerto ricans, mexicans, dominicans, blacks and more that are out there any given weekend. Oh yeah , and by the way, Puerto Rico is part of america so they are actually americans.

Thanks Moto.... l'll match you one Ignorant Bastard, and raise you a "chill the **** out."
I'm just pointing out the obvious when I've rode through there on multiple occasions. Yes, It is a multicultural enclave that seems to leave garbage everywhere. Yes, White, black, brown and other. Did I mean to demean an entire country? No... For that I apologize. Is it a cross section of everyone that lives in Manhattan. No, it's not. By far.

But I will say, the people that go there are f u cking littering slobs. In the worse degree possible. It's appalling.

Sorry to offend you.
