sonofa*****!!! my bike's gone! (midtown nyc)

No not my woodrup (whew). My daily ride got clipped from a lamp post on 28th between 2nd and 3rd. My own fault, really- it was a sitting duck with just a single cable and master lock. It didn't look like much with its funky spraypaint coat, but damn- I had it set up just the way I wanted it, Nitto albatross bars with one bar-end shifter running it as a four speed. It was a good street bike, I'm going to build up another one just like it. I don't know if I'll find wheels as good as that one had though. Ah well, live and learn.

cheers, Joe

That sucks. Sorry to hear.

I wish the police, instead of ticketing cyclists, would set up stings to go after bike thieves. Risk/reward is skewed so far heavily in favor of the thieves right now.

Six month minimum sentence for stealing a bike sounds right. I think the .0000001% of bike thieves that are actually caught might get a fine or probation - at most.

Sorry to hear your loss. Was it busy daytime or evening/night? For how long was the bike parked there?

I left it there while I went on an overnight trip- gone when I came back. It was near the car rental place. I've had it locked outside all summer but that block is a little dicey, I guess. I've got to put together another ugly beater, but this time actually lock it adequately. I never thought anyone would look twice at that one.

like I said, live and learn,
thanks for interest
Joe

just got my commuter stolen a couple weeks ago but it was a decently nice ride albeit built with inexpensive parts. Fortunately, my renters insurance came through for me so i'm not out too bad. just bought a nashbar touring bike to replace it. I'm taking the rest of the insurance money and buying a new CF racing bike then selling my current roadie. overall it's been an ainconvenience but its working out okay. i may not be looking to sell the wheels that come on this touring bike for short money so if your in need of some wheels, shoot me a pm.

Agreed. Fear of a bike being stolen is likely a major deterrent keeping people from using a bike for utility purposes. Fortunately I don't live in a high-theft area like NYC, but even here I was a little nervous about leaving my bike locked up while I went for an extended hike today.
