Why Do We Allow Breweries To Sponsor So Many Organized Rides & Bike Events?

I like my Guinness Draught as much as the next guy, but with so many cyclists being picked off the road and killed by drunken drivers, why do we, as a community, continue to support events that are sponsored by beer and alcohol producers?

Because no amount of beer sponsorship is generally going to change the number of people who choose to drive drunk on the roads. I wear cycling jerseys from microbreweries that I like and have ridden to yet I've never gotten behind the wheel drunk. People who drink and drive are going to do that regardless of whether a certain company sponsors an event. If we made the punishment for getting caught a mandatory 48 hours in jail even on the first offense universally, that would fix that problem.

By this logic, we should also oppose events which are sponsored by car manufacturers.

What's wrong with it? Maybe the breweries should sponsor car clubs / shows instead, right? Oh wait, that's what the bars are for!

There's no correlation between beer company sponsorship and drunk driving. That's just silly.

OK, never mind. As I wrote in another forum, so many cyclists tell stories of being hit or nearly hit by drunken drivers that I found it ironic that we are so willing to attend bicycling events sponsored by beer companies. Faghettaboutit. I've got to get my face out of this computer and go ride in the rain or something.
