Curious what routes you ride.

I have circled Staten Island a few times. Although, it is hard to truly encircle it, but we did it the best we could.

Starting near the ferry, and going counter-clockwise, a friend and I took Richmond Terrace west. I forgot what we took South, (maybe part Richmond Ave), and took Hylan back and onto the beach path to Bay Street. I think it was 40 miles.

Anyone figure how to get over the Goethals bridge? Is there anyone you know who we can complaine to?

There is no bike bath on the Geothals. That is common knowledge. However, the plan for a replacement bridge for the Goethals includes a bike path.

I rode from Staten Island over the Bayonne Bridge a few times, and continued north to the GW Bridge and over into Manhattan. When taking the Ferry back to S.I., you make a loop. There is also the option to take the Path rain from World Trade Ctr. to Hoboken, to return to the west suide of the Hudson River.

I also crossed the Bayonne Bridge and went west into NJ.

There are a few ways to go. Even if you did not want an all-day adventure, a trip to Hoboken for lunch is cool.

Cyclerock is correct, the only bridge you can currently ride over onto or off Staten Island is the Bayonne Bridge. I ride to work in Jersey City a couple times a week. The ride from Staten Island up to Nyack is very nice. You can go up through Hoboken and along River Road past the GW Bridge, or you can go into Manhattan (Path Train or NY Waterway Ferry) and go up the west side.

Thanks cyclerock and madone. I'm always looking for a different ride.
I normally ride from Brooklyn to Nyack via Manhattan and the GW.
I drive through S.I. all the time but never cycle through there.
You wouldn't happen to have detailed directions for either of those rides?

its not the greatest place to ride since the drivers arent used to us on "their" road, theres very little in the way of bike paths and less in the way of a safe shoulder to ride on

usually a good amount of wind ripping around and unless you know your way around and dont mind riding on narrow one lane roads theres not many real climbs to be had

supposedly the new goethals will be finished in 2015 (doubtful, since construction hasnt even started yet and were halfway through 2013.

i usually ride down hylan (since i live on the south shore) to the ferry, then up to nyack and back which comes out to a clean century.

you can usually see me on richmond/hylan in the morning/evening for my commute

This is a foot path on the current Goethals bridge. You can see it on Google maps and I've known quite a few people that used it at one time. Lets face the facts, they are not going to complete the New Goethals bridge until there is money for the program and it was pulled not long ago. You can read about the funding problems on the net. The money right now is for fixing the Bayonne Bridge so the ships can travel under them to Elizabeth. They are spending a fortune on that bridge and it will take years before it's finished.

We need to start emailing Port Authority to open the path now! I make it a habit to call and ask for names of those who can assist in getting us access. I make it a point to tell them I would gladly pay the 12 dollar toll to cross because a taxi is over $45 dollars. I then email Port Authority every other month asking when are they going to open the path. I've been doing this for the past 4 years. Please make your voice and email address heard!

As far as I know, that Geothals footpath is there for bridge workers and is narrrow. There are no access points. I circled Staten Island a few times, and lived there for a short time. If you have known people to bike to / from Staten Island, it had to be the Bayonne Bridge.
