Montgomery Co, MD - bike friendly roads?

Where do the roadies ride in MoCo? I'm familiar with Beach Dr being popular during the weekends. But how about heading out from DC and going to Darnestown, Potomac, Poolesville area? Macarthur, Falls Rd, River Road, Glen Road are the roads that I read about that take you there. But most of them are single lane with no shoulder. Do cyclists frequently use these roads to the point where motorists are aware of them? Is it best to stay off these roads during rush hour? In other cities I've ridden in there were usually a few main roads (not trails) that were popular with cyclists.

I've ridden all the roads you mentioned but I'm not the best one to answer your question.

These guys should be able to help. https://www.potomacpedalers.org/
