Riding from NYC to Ithaca NY - good route?

Hi everyone,

Doing a small tour this fall riding from NYC to Toronto. Plan to join up the Erie Canal trail N of the Finger Lakes. The one part of my route I haven't been able to dial in is riding from NYC to Ithaca / Watkins Glen region. Plenty of cue sheets available once I'm there, but it's that leg I'm whiffing out on.

Right now I could ride up route 9 which I know all too well from weekend rides to Nyack or Bear, to join route 17 at Goshen and head west.

Just wondering if anyone has suggestions for something more scenic and more directly NWerly.

Likewise what's it like to ride Bicycle Route 17?

Maybe I should hit Pennsylvania's route L west out of NYC instead?

And then finally, what a good route would be from Binghamton area to Ithaca where I'll have to leave 17 behind. Once I reach that area I'll be good.

Any advice much appreciated especially with recommended campsites (and yes I know it's going to be cold thank god for my sub 2 pound 15 degree mummy bag). I will be aiming for 96 miles a day. I'd prefer something gentle and picturesque more than all else, gonna take this one easy.

I had marked a similar route for the Endless Mountains 1240k which was held in August. I marked up to Owego and then west. I have copied that route and added a section to Ithaca. You could also ride Bike Route 11 and head west from either Marathon on Rte 221 to Route 79 or go up to Messengerville (north of Marathon and take 392 to Route 13 in Dryden to Ithaca.

Contact me if you decide to do this.

Thanks for this, looks like my plans are changing cause I can stay with a friend near Bath, so I may skip Ithaca alltogether. The big mystery seems cutting west along route 17 from Goshen to this area, can't turn up anyone who's ridden it. I'll definitely share what I find out, with you and the Ithaca cycling club.

Here are some RWGPS routes I rode earlier this year from Watkins Glen to Port Jervis. It meanders a little but I wasn't that concerned about taking a direct route. Not quite what you were looking for but maybe you can use parts of it.

Other than around Elmira it was all top notch riding. The best legs were the one from Port Jervis to Hancock and riding up the west side of Seneca Lake. PineCrest Campground south of Windsor was nice. Watkins Glen State Park was also a great place to camp. Take a hike through the glen there if you get a chance. Let me know if you want any info regarding services along the way.

Heading through Goshen is a great idea. There is a nice paved path from Monroe to Goshen I would use if I were headed that way.
