Philly Bike Expo - Philadelphia

The Philly Bike Expo is this weekend at the Convention Center in City Center. Looks to be even bigger than previous years.

Anybody going?

I am thinking about going. Never been to a Bike Expo before.

The GF and I will be riding our Surly LHTs to the expo on Sunday, which means free day passes for the both of us assuming we are one of the first 101 people to arrive on Surlys. Probably grabs some eats in Chinatown afterwards.

I'll be there, not riding a bike to it though.

We made a video of the Philly Bike Expo a few years ago... really sorry to miss it this year, the venue is even bigger and better!!

I'll be there. I'll coming from New York to visit a friend in Philly.

As an aside, I doubt we'll arrive by bike. I find it odd that he rides thousands of miles a year, but has no interest in cycling as transportation. His local travels are either on foot or by cab. I got back on a bicycle to get around New York. Recreational riding is just a enjoyable side effect.

We had a nice time there. I met some legendary people of the industry. I saw some neat stuff. I took a ride around Philly on a triple tandem, which was fun.

I went – and had a great time. Always interesting to see new stuff and swag. Expected more bike brand participation but was mostly vendors of unique stuff. Surly, Velo Orange being the exception and then some fantastic custom builds and frame builders etc. Great fun and will definitely head in again next year. Think I’ll take the Schuylkill river trail in from Valley Forge in 2014. Great ride.

I didn't get down there, but the cool thing is that this event seems to be geared toward promoting bike "culture," rather than bike glam and flash. It almost looks as if I'd be able to actually afford some of the stuff they were showing.

Like the $11,000 Calfee carbon tandems on display from Tandems East. (Chris Calfee was actually at the expo.) While there was some of both, I'd say most of the merchandise was not on the lower end of the scale.

Agreed, but it wasn't only for millionaires, either.

Oh, really. Then I guess I got the wrong impression. So when is somebody going to present a bike expo for "the rest of us?"

Deaver 11-19-13 06:39 PM

Papa Tom, I don't think you got the wrong impression. There were goods that were expensive and then plenty that were not. I thought it was a great show. RoadHolland's video above does showcase a good review of the vendors that appeared.

Neat. Perhaps I will get down there next year. I have never been to a bike expo in New York that did not disappoint me.

Did you hit hand-built expo in Greenpoint, Brooklyn over Labor Day weekend?

No. Was it hand-built as in "custom made so very, very expensive," or hand-built as in "made from lots of parts I found around the neighborhood?"

Whatchoo laughin' at, noglider? I was serious, man!

indyfabz 11-22-13 08:28 AM

Custom, but I have no idea what the prices were. Not all custom frames are very, very expensive.
