I'm visiting NY from San Francisco in the coming days and curious about the local shops. I'm thinking about: what local shops and/or cycling goods are particularly New Yorkish, and where might I find them? You can get a new Colnago anywhere, so simply citing a "good" bike shop isn't unique.

Anything that really says New York to you?

I am from Oakland but live in Brooklyn now.

NYC Velo. Located in the Lower East Side on 2nd ave. Lots of stuff to do around there as well. Stuff meaning food to eat and beer to drink.
718 Cyclery. Located in Gowanus Brooklyn. Right around the corner from a solid BBQ joint.
RA Cycles. Located in Park Slope. This is the place to go if you want to look at high end stuff. Their inventory is pretty insane. You can walk to the park from there.
Chari and Co. If your into fixies.
Rapha Club. Don't go to the Rapha club. They will take all your money.

But they all seem bland and one shop is the same

One shop that comes to mind is Red Lantern on Myrtle Ave in Brooklyn. Not so much for the bikes, but for the beer. That whole side of Brooklyn, Fort Greene, Williamsburg, Greenpoint, Bushwick, Prospect Heights, Clinton Hill, Bed-Stuy, Park Slope is bike crazy.

I've only been to the two near me, Toga on West 63rd st and Master bike shop on West 72nd. The one on 72nd st is small but they are really helpful. I brought in my bike two days ago and they adjusted my chain and deraileur for free, and it took them a minute, tops.

What are you looking for when you come in?

Something I wouldn't typically find in San Francisco, and that (if I value my life -- not traveling alone!) will fit in my suitcase on return.

Other than R&A, because of their great inventory, I don't consider bike shops in NYC much of a destination. I've become indifferent to them all unless they serve coffee or beer, or both.

Another place that comes to mind though is Strictly Bicycles on Hudson Terrace, but that's across the GWB in NJ. They are on the main cycling training route that everyone uses from the bridge and people tend to gather there. They have coffee, but no beer.

Then probably like t-shirts, the only thing you'ld find would be store specific jerseys and the like. Or something like this at Paragon sports.

And they also sell a good amount of bikes that cost more than cars. That place is ridiculous. But they do have some beautiful bikes and it's a great place to stop before heading up 9w, or coming back to relax outside and get coffee or refill water.

Not sure if you're interested in folding bikes, but 2 shops - BFold on 13th Street and NYCEWheels on 84th Street - are unlike any shops that I've seen anywhere. Both are fairly compact places and crammed with merchandise, and both employ staff with considerable expertise in their niche area. I've bought two bikes from one of them (BFold) and have received great service. NYCEWheels seems to also have a devoted following.

Yeah, I'm scratching my head too. Other than local jerseys, T-shirts, and attitude, what could be different? Unless of course you are asking about the climate specific new Campagnolo stuff, we have it!

Went to signature today. Beautiful bikes, but woah, 350 for a fit? Anyway it's worth it or just inflated NYC prices?

THis. Next time I go to NYC I would definitely go to these places. Hard to find well stocked folder shops (that carries folders other than dahon and brompton) in most of America.

I live here and I never go to these places, although I went to the Rapha store/cafe/club on Gaansvoort a few weeks back.

The fitting process takes a few hours and the money is deducted from the price of the bike if you purchase one from them. And it is after all Manhattan where rents aren't cheap either.
