Stolen - surly cross-check, dark blue - nyc

Hello,

I am posting this thread asking for help locating my Surly Cross-Check. This was my daily commuter + touring bike.

It was stolen from the street on Gramercy Park East in Manhattan between 20th and 21st streets around 1 PM on Thursday, 1-16-2014. The frame was locked to scaffolding with a U-lock and a cable lock threaded through the wheels. The Kryptonite Evolution U-lock was cut in half and left on the ground.

Frame is dark blue, has a well-worn Brooks professional saddle, 700 x 42c continental cross-ride tires, Ultegra triple chain-ring in the front, egg-beater pedals, and Mavic a319 wheelset.

Thanks for the help.

Hi, sorry about your bike, just wondering if you can claim on the warranty since the lock was left behind.

Cloned from the original in General Cycling, which in turn got moved to the Stolen Bikes sticky in News and Announcements.

That is terrible, given the quality of the lock and the time of the day. Was your bike parked there for very long time (enough for someone to notice and cut the lock)? There should be a lot of people around?

This is my usual lock-up location for the past year. I locked it up around 10:45 AM, went inside. I went out for lunch around 12:30 and the surly was still there. I came back around 1:30 and it was gone. The U-Lock was laying on the sidewalk.

Thanks for the thoughts. Hopefully the insurance will be helpful. Never expected a Kryptonite lock to be cut with such ease and no witnesses.

The lock was a few years old, and registered to a different bike, so I don't think the anti-theift claim will be able to be made through Kryptonite.

You may want to register it at stolenbicycleregistry. It may not be a good idea to always lock your bike at the same location, especially in theft-ridden lower Manhattan (though I agree who would have thought a Kryptonite could be cut so easily). Someone could have watched it for some time before taking action on that day, since he was ready to have tools to cut the Kryptonite during just one hour lunch time.

Hope the thief will be caught!

That's a heck of a location for a bike to be stolen. Bike thieves are everywhere. I'll keep an eye out for you.
