    Cycling climbs near Bensalem

    I live in Bensalem PA and am looking for the best cycling climbs in my area. Any climb within 50 miles of Bensalem will do. Was looking on Google maps and noticed Sourland mountain. Any good climbs there?

    What do you consider a good climb??? If you start at Province Line and Rt. 518 and head over the Sourlands (Province Line becomes Lindbergh) to Wertsville Rd and return, it's a 10.5 mile round trip with 1050 feet of climb. The steepest parts are perhaps 7%. Other roads through the Sourlands are similar.

    North of Stockton on Rt. 29 a few miles is Federal Twist Road. If you start at Rt. 29, you get an elevation gain of close to 400 feet with the steep part being around 12-13%.

    Thanks for the advice. Tomorrow I plan to ride to the Princeton Airport and back. 60 mile trip. I don't think I'll head to Sourland because I'm concerned about catching a flat in the middle of nowhere.

    Had a nice ride to Princeton, sometime this week I'll do the Sourland climb. I'm new the cycling and don't know what I'd call a good climb, all I know is I want to tackle the toughest climbs in the area

    Do you have a car? If you make the relatively short drive to somewhere like Lambertville or Bull's Island in Hunterdon County, NJ you can have all the hills you want. East from the river there is no place to go but up. Hunterdon County is not only beautiful, it's one of the wealthiest counties in the entire country. I have some cue sheets for rides from L'Ville and Bull's Island. I you want to venture 10 miles further for a start, I have a cue sheet for a gorgeous 72 mile ride ride from Frenchtown, NJ to Belvidere and then back down along the river.

    Here's yesterday's ride, including the Federal Twist Road climb which ridewithgps claims has a maximum grade of 12.7%.

    You need to send me a private message with your email address. I only have the cue sheets in Word or PDF format. You would probably need to get a ride to the start locations as doing the rides riding to and from Bensalem would be a real chore.

    Been up it plenty of times. I have no reason to be believe that's not accurate. The even tougher climbs are on the other side of the Hunterdon Plateau. Roads like Ludlow Station from Asbury, Fox Farm and Fiddler's Elbow. IIRC, the Elbow has a ruling grade of over 21%. Slyker and Academy/Cokesburry-Califon, both out of Califon, are also tough. CR 579 south from Bloomsbury is another tough one. Tunnel Hill Rd. from 173 and Sweet Hollow up to CR 579 are another two. And Shaaf Rd. from Bloomsbury up to up to Myler Rd.

    On Sunday I rode back to Philly from Dogwood Haven Campground in Upper Black Eddy, PA. Rode up Friday morning. I was probably too early to see you as I hit the road around 7:15 and was having breakfast at the Full Moon in L'Ville when it opened at 9:30. On Saturday I took a day ride from the campground in UBE to Alpha. There were brush fires on the road along the river so I ended up having to ride CR 519 back to Milford. There was a brutal climb. I had my heavy touring bike with only one small pannier with a pump and the leg and arm warmers that I had tken off. At one point I was going 3 mph in my 26x34 gear. I wouldn't recommend riding that road, however, there is a decent amount of traffic and no real shoulder. The decent into Milford was long and had a good shoulder most of the way. It would make a nice training climb.

    Find climbs on Strava. (I think you need a free sign-up to use the search function?) You can drag or zoom the map and the segments update on the fly.

    Some Strava climb segments have inaccurate elevation data. I think they use the recording from the first rider that creates the segment.

    Wow, there are some steep climbs in your area. It's similar to my SW Ohio area, either reasonable grades, or very steep roads that go straight up the hill.

    Sorry, did not mean to imply that ridewithgps is innaccurate. It's just that grade is tough to measure. Sometimes when I look at the GPS data I get a higher number or lower number, but around 13% seems about right.

    In any case, a percent or two higher than this and I'm walking!

    I may have worded my comment poorly. I was trying to say that that measurement seems accurate. The last time I went up it, someone with me slipped in a little dirt/gravel and fell over because he was going so slowly. If you are on SR 29 and want a "fun" climb, try Tumble Falls Rd. just south of Warsaw Rd. It's also very pretty and takes you up to CR 651.

    Huh? The SRT to Valley Forge is flat as a pancake. Maybe the route in questions uses Umbria St. to get to the start of the trail, but I would be shocked to learn that even the ruling grade (much less the average) on Umbria is 11.6%.

    Harts Lane certainly has a higher ruling grade than Umbria. Maybe that measurement was taken from the start of Harts Lane at River Rd. It's not bad at first and actually levels out before becoming very steep near the top.

    It's definitely pretty, especially when there's water in the falls. I've gone down Tumble Falls Road, but not up, I guess I should give that a try.

    Darn, wish I'd seen this earlier. I just came back from a 75 mile ride from Bensalem to Sourland Mountain. Thanks though, I will do some loops around that route next time out.

    OK, on yesterday's ride I went up, not down, Tumble Falls Road. Below is my bike in front of the falls at the beginning of the climb. Only a little water coming down the falls. I expected this to be harder than Federal Twist Road. Instead it seemed slightly easier. Ridewithgps gave it an 11.8% maximum grade compared to 12.7% for Federal Twist. Very close!
