has anyone been on the bklyn/queens belt bike path lately?

can anyone report on condition?

Essentially:

Knapp to Flatbush. Still about 100 yards of deep soft sand just west of Plumb Beach. Plans to fix but I'd doubt it's going to happen this year.

Flatbush to Canarsie. The same or better. The Mill Basin drawbridge is still a mess, no guardrail but ridable at your comfort level. Then fine to Canarsie with a new bridge and path over Paedergat Basin.

Canarsie to Pennsylvania Ave., all new with a new bridge and path over Fresh Creek.

Penn. to Howard beach had no changes and is is good shape.

thx ...so it seems HB to to canarsie is a good run...any clue how many miles that is?

zacster 04-17-14 07:53 PM

Check Google maps, but it isn't that much. Maybe 3-4 miles at most.

I posted some pictures, or at least I took some pictures, of the Sheepshead Bay to Flatbush section about 6 months ago. I'll look for them. Nothing has changed.

3 miles to 84th St.

The Canarsie to Flatbush section is also ridable, just the Mill Basin bridge is narrow.

You were lucky to have missed the huge pond caused by last Thursdays rain, the path was unridable just east of the riding academy, even the grass was muck. I think .hat are is prone to flooding/ponding. It will get re-built eventually when they replace the Mill Basin drawbridge.

I was on the Belt Pkwy. (Shore Pkwy.) bike path about two weeks ago. It was just fine from 84th St. through Flatbush Ave. There was a sign indicating that it is closed from Flatbush Ave. westward, even though there was no obstruction to getting on the path. I got on there and immediately encountered someone coming the other way. Assuming that he had come from Knapp St., I asked him whether the path was open; but he said that it was covered with sand. So I guess that he had gone west a bit from Flatbush Ave. and then turned back. I didn't proceed any farther on the path.

I just rode the entire length from of the Belt/Loop bike paths from Bayridge to Cross Bay. Steve B's report is still the best one out there

Define smooth sailing:) Emmons Ave between Nostrand and West End Ave can get really packed with people/cars this time of the year. On Neptune Ave - from Coney Island Ave to Ocean Pkwy is usually busy during the day/evening. Not sure about Shore Pkwy (too many lights for my liking, I stay away from it). Early morning is probably your best bet and could probably come close to "smooth sailing" definition.

Was on the path today and it was beautiful, mostly. lol Obviously this is Brooklyn not some rural area where all the roads are paved to perfection and such. But other than the Mill Basin Draw Bridge, which is still absurdly narrow and absent a guardrail (for anyone who feels like offing themselves, this might be a nice spot to do it).

Everything was really smooth. Oh and if anyone was on the little Mill Basin drawbridge segment (There were e bunch of people all dressed in red) I apologize for unintentionally being a little bit of a d*uche. I have ridden this path my whole life and I passed a couple of guys who were apparently also traveling eastbound and waiting by the foot of the bridge for the westbound folks to cross, and not realizing what they were doing, I continued on. It only occurred to me after I passed the small crowd in red shirts, that the stopped people were, ya know, waiting out of courtesy for the folks in red to traverse the bridge.

So, if anyone here was in the group at about 10:05AM, I apologize. In my defense, I have ridden the path many times, but never during times when bike traffic congested it to the point where someone else had the right of way (lol either that or today was the FIRST TIME in my life I actually noticed, albeit after the fact).

FYI plum beach is now fixed and opened up....does anyone know if they plow the greenway when it snows? (wishful thinking) :)

Oh, Dream On !. Big time wishful thinking.

The NYC Parks Dept. does seemingly zero maintanence on any section of the assorted bike paths in NYC (or at least the ones I ride), other then cutting the grass and even then they typically leave all the grass clippings covering the path, hiding potholes and glass, etc...

So given that they don't they don't clear grass, I'm thinking they won't clear the snow.

Apologies in in advance for the high level of sarcasm, but good to hear that Plum is now open, it was my preferred bike commute route.

zacster 12-29-14 02:07 AM

I'll have to check Plum (or is it plumb?) beach out. This is my regular beach route, and I also usually do the loop around Cross Bay once or twice each year. And if it is open, the NYC Century will likely go that way.

I have seen the path plowed from Flatbush Ave eastward so that the person that raises the drawbridge can drive to the parking spot along the route.

yes is definitely done, been doing it the past few days... shore pkwy may not be the best maintained or go thru the best areas but I really like it. not much traffic and if u wanna open up not many worries

Great. They were also starting a project to rebuild the bridge between Knapp and Flatbush, so maybe this is all part of that project.
