The GimpRide! (Apologies to anyone who identifies as a gimp)

A bunch of us deferred to a couple of riders recovering from recent surgeries, and a couple of others suffering from IWALW* syndrome, and took a nice somewhat shorter and slower than AA ride to Northport where a big festival was taking place. 38 very pleasant and warm miles and a good time had by all. A recommendation to any rider passing through town, for Copenhagen Bakery down by the waterfront park.

A nice LIE ride out to Shelter Rock then Willets, kind of of a tail wind coming back.

5 folks, including a buddies 32 yr. old daughter who once again is reminded that spin class does not get you hill climbing power !, yuk, yuk. She kicked our old asses on the flats though !.

And jeez summer showed up today, hot and muggy by 10 AM.

It sure did. We did a fast AA to Sea Cliff, and I sweated buckets. This weather is my kryptonite! We had the legs to maintain the pace without issue, but I was so paranoid about being stricken by cramps (in spite of my electrolyte intake, and, yes, pickle juice, which is a acquired taste) that we decided to return home via a flatter route and just cruise along at 19 or 20. Made it, thankfully, without cramps. I drank 80 oz. over 43 miles.

Damn... too hot to ride during the day. So I went for a night ride. I put the headlight and taillight on the CX bike and headed out. Stopped for a break at a park that overlooks the Great South Bay.

Then stopped at Ralph's, before they closed, for something cold.

Awesome ride, just too many bugs.

Nice commute home. Weather was nice today, I hate riding in hot weather. It was about 70 at the beach, SSW winds pushed me along at a nice clip. I had to bail onto the street for a bit as the Boardwalk was crowded, but they paved Shore Front Parkway !.

Went for a late afternoon ride to Tobay. A bit windy but parking lot 4 was a zoo due to the concert. Hundreds of young ladies drinking and relieving themselves in the bushes.

Set a PR for the fasted 40k and a PR for Tobay back to Cedar Creek... 18.8mph average, 28mph (max). Damn, that's really fast for me.

I took a late afternoon ride too, but headed in exactly the opposite direction. "Twas delightful. I saw nobody watering the shrubbery, nor did I do so myself. 37 miles, but heading north, I had more land to work with.

I see from your photo that the gates have been removed, but we are still doing what we do best here on LI; signs with the words NO and PROHIBITED.

Well... they don't want cyclist riding in the parking lot and getting hit, it does make sense. There's no reason to go past he bathrooms.

One day, when they extend to path to Captree, i'm sure there will be a safe path to get past the parking lots.

Was thinking I'd sue Tobay for injuries sustained after hitting that solid steel post while riding my bike into the parking lot.

Isn't that what people do ?

It would be nice to be able, at the very least, to walk a bike along the perimeter of the lot to the restaurant, and not leave an expensive bike unattended. It would also be pretty simple to mark off a lane along said perimeter so you wouldn't have to walk. There wasn't any ongoing bloodbath IIRC when people used to ride across the lot at Jones Beach. Easier to just say NO. It's what we do best.

One of the reasons I look forward to the building of a Captree path is the satisfaction, even if I don't use it that often, of seeing it rammed down various throats.

I thought that night ride you did was pretty cool.

Last I heard of the Captree extension was start date in 2021, they think.

I had heard there was a retired judge in Gilgo that sued to prevent construction. Then the state deferred due to budget issues.

Someday, and then Tobay and Babylon will deal with the hoards of undesirables wearing spandex.

Oldnslow - I think we met last week - I had a red Roubaix by Tobay beach, and you watched it for me while I hit the head. Thank you!

Yes, and we rode together back... 18.8mph. Must of been all that drafting. I'm never that fast.

I had one of those wake up moments this morning while riding from home to the NE in Bethpage, that I'm doing like 17 and not really working at it. Got as far as N Bellmore.
Winds are "supposed" to be due south at 25, but maybe I ought to check. Sure 'nuff, SW at 25. Maybe I'll head down to Lynbrook and get a tail wind home.

2 great rides past 2 days. Yesterday, The Mrs surprised me with the news that, since it was my birthday;

1. She had taken the day off!!....

2. We wuz goin" fer a ride, with some friends.....

3. Afterward we were going out to dinner, with said friends, to a place on the beach in Northport, where we have ridden so many times only to chew on Clif bars.

So, a 47 mile ride, fighting the aforementioned stiff headwind all the way home, but a good one nonetheless. And then dinner al fresco at La Casa Cafe on Crab Meadow Beach. Food was very good, sunset beautiful, and company wonderful. I should have these birthday things more often.

Today a short 32 miler with some of the same people, but alas, we all failed to persuade my wonderful spouse who I don't deserve to take another day off. Oh well.

Any riders who frequent northwest Suffolk Co., check out Crab Meadow.

Thanks for the help!

On Wednesday 6/21 I was out for my early morning ride in the area of Lawrence NY before work. I started to hear some rubbing noise emanating from the front wheel and pulled over to check it out. Almost immediately a cyclist who later said his name was Steve stopped & offered assistance. It turned out to be something minor but if Steve reads this forum I would like to say thanks👍👏

We went out by ourselves a bit before 11am when the rain had passed. MISTAKE. Sauna like humidity had us quit after only 27 miles. We should have waited a few hours, it's really nice now. Oh well.

Anybody ridden Old Country Rd. east of Round Swamp ?,

I believe oldnslw indicated it was in terrible condition this past spring, so was wondering if they did any repairs.

Thx,

SB

Yeah, that section. I guess my question is "Is it dangerous to take it 40 mph like I used too ?".
