Long Island: Good Ride Today?

My record low so far is 9 degrees. I am not eager to break that record.
The non-porous top layer makes a big difference for me. I discovered its benefit by accident when I slipped this garment on during a drizzly day, and found to my surprise that it held in heat very effectively. So now I won't be without it once the temperature dips below the mid-50s.
When we get down below 30, this garment gets replaced by a lined sweatshirt/jacket.

Just brought my wife's bike down to the basement today. I may have one or two rides left in me before Halloween, but I'm starting to sense the end of my commuting and recreational riding season. I almost set out to convince some of my local elected official friends to set up complimentary supervised bicycle parking at Oyster Fest this year. Good thing I didn't. It's been cold both days of the event and I hardly saw a single bicycle this year, let alone my own.

Yes, it's a drag at the onset of every winter, after being spoiled by months of "put on shorts, jersey, and go", to deal with the hassle of what's going to do the job that particular day. The first COLD ride is tough to get motivated to do. But I always find that, having dressed properly for conditions, I get home & say "that was really no big deal and a nice ride to boot". Once over that hump, I'm good to go.

Thois week is going to be warm again. There's still time, but I foresee joining the local gym for spin class soon.

I just heard that the temps are going up again this week, so I'm psyched to at least ride to work a few days. However, having spent the last couple of years simplifying my equipment so I can just "get on and ride," I don't know how much patience I have left for planning the transition from my heavy riding clothing to my work clothing and vice versa. It's probably just a matter of a few more rides before I am done for the season.
That's one of the cool things about living in the Northeast, though. Riding "season," for those of us who pack it in when it gets cold, is really precious. I've spent a lot of time working in and visiting Florida, where there are bike lanes and paths everywhere, and I hardly ever see anybody biking. Like those of us New Yorkers who have spent a lifetime procrastinating on visiting the Statue of Liberty "because it will always be there," people in year-round warm climates don't feel any urgency to get out and enjoy the good weather.

I rather ride on Long Island than Florida.
BTW, Bike America does rent bikes. I priced a Tarmac for $60 for a 24 hour period.

When that happens, and it did happen last year, there's XC skis and snowshoes.

Awesome......I was going to go with perfect, but awesome is better because the last 2 days DID have one imperfection; I FAILED to convince my wife to take a sick day. Failed twice. Lord, how I tried.
Went to Cold Spring Hbr yesterday (49 m) and Huntington Bay today (51 m). So kind of a cheating split century, kinda. I've been pining to do a real one out to Montauk and take the LIRR back, which I have not done in a couple of years, but I cannot bring myself to leave my elderly Labrador cooped up for that many hours. I'd feel so bad about it I would not be able to enjoy the ride, so I'll have to be content with 50 or 60 milers until I can work something out.

Snuck in a 41 miler on the road this morning before the rain came. It was a bit windy riding along dune road (understatement). I was giving it all i had to stay above 15mph into the brutal e/se wind.
And of course, as it goes with windy rides, most of my westerly miles were on tree lined/wind protected streets where I didn't get the full effect of the downwind, and my easterly miles were all along the south shore, mostly exposed next to beach or farms.
I blame the route coordinator.

Be careful on those wet leaves!!
Yesterday I had to go to a local hospital facility to renew my CPR certification (job requirement) so, seeing the clouds breaking up, slapped the fenders and Carradice bag containing civilian clothes onto one of my touring bikes, and rode the 20 miles up to Old Brookville. A lovely ride but the wet leaves just about covered the shoulders of some roads and forced me to take it pretty easy; took me an hour and 10 min. (casual?? ha). On the way back detoured to REI in Carle Place to pick up a small item. It was great to turn what would have been a tedious drive into 48 miles of fun. But them there leaves are slippery!

Sunday 11/1 - 3.5 hour MTB ride in Hither Woods at 6:30am 36 miles. I looped back to ride with the group at 8:00am. A really great day for weather, and the first day on bow hunting season (not too worried about hunters until shotgun season starts 1/1).
Wednesday 11/4 - 70 miles on the road this morning (GPS says 68, Map my ride says 71) at 6:00 am. I did what I call my 'Grande Hamptons' Loop. Water Mill South, Sagaponack, EH, Amagansett, out to montauk town, then loop the northside springs, NW woods, Sag Harbor, A bit of Noyac, the down through Bridgehampton. It was really chilly until about 8:00am. After that it warmed up fast.
Really great weather we are having, so I hope you guys are getting out there. I'll be dreaming about days like this come february

Ahh, today was the day I should have done it......ridden to that lighthouse out there and taken the train back, maybe running into C Law, with a phone call to work feigning illness......
But no, I'm too damn..responsible(boring). So on this absolute jewel of a day, did my default 54 miler to the Nissequogue where there is a little replica of said lighthouse. I got back in plenty of time to walk the old hound a couple of miles in the woods so he could hit the couch contented. And now I'm, dammit, at work.

Hot and humid?.....But it's November. Oh well, put on the summer stuff and rode down to Tobay Beach. Stopped by the boardwalk at Jones Beach, watched waves and fishermen for a while, and headed home. Great twenty five mile round trip and looks like more of the same tomorrow.

Jeez, 71 degrees out ?.
Did a quick little 1 hr. spin on my touring bike, had to be careful with very wet roads and leaves. Some turns on the streets were sketchy.
Still, 71 ?, had to take off and stuff my wind shell. Then it got sunny.
Probably going to get in road rides the next 3 days.

Ditto today, except only 41 miles. Explored some new roads in Huntington Bay. We have a new (to us) tandem in the offing; I bet it gets cold the day I get it road ready.
