Jersey City bike parking safety?

Is anyone here familiar with the area around the PATH train station at Pavonia Newport, NJ? There is a shopping mall 2-3 min walk from there and I wonder if it's safe to leave the bike locked in that area while going into the mall. Also which safer, lock closer to the mall or to the train station? Thanks.

The area is fine. Mix of office and residential towers. It's an urban area, however, so make sure you're following best practices when locking up. Personally, I'd choose locking up near the PATH instead of the mall. If you can find a bike rack in front of an office tower might want to try that. Though no guarantee the bike will be safe, at least you'll have a steady stream of people smoking, walking to Starbucks, etc.

Thanks. I wonder which is considered safer: to leave the bike parked in midtown Manhattan around 34th st. PATH station and then take PATH w/o the bike, or to bring bike aboard PATH, and then park it near the mall/PATH station? (Of course no guarantee either way)

This one's easy; take the bike to Jersey City (assuming you're not going during rush hour)

I see alot of bikes at the NewPort train station. I would not bring a new bike but a used clunker and the Kryptonite New York chain. No bike is safe at train stations in Jersey City or Hoboken. It's always sad to see a bike missing a rear wheel while locked to rack.

I would not leave a good bike around the mall and if you do I would keep it as close to the transit station by Macy's. Do not use the bike rack by the parking deck. Many a bike has been stolen from there.
