Anybody with a first-hand story to report?
Folks,
I'm writing a column for this Sunday on the incidents of dangerous passing in blind curves on the mountain. I'm aware of the Sept. 26 and Aug. 22 incidents. If you know of others, please email me at dborenstein@bayareanewsgroup.com with details, names and contact information.
Thank you,
Dan Borenstein

After hounding by Kalin, state Sen. Steve Glazer, Assemblywoman Catharine Baker and this editorial page, state officials have apparently finally gotten the message. Dana Jones, northern division chief for California State Parks, said Wednesday that her agency had found money for a safety study, new signs and the painting of double-yellow center lines that, amazingly, are missing on the mountain's roads.

^^^ Fantastic column!!! What a breath of fresh air.
Many thanks for helping get this snowball rolling, Scott. If solid center lines remind one driver not to pass where it isn't safe and prevents one car vs. bike (or car vs. car) fiasco, you will have accomplished something very worth while. Good on ya!
For the rest of us: Please read the column and send Dan Borenstein an e-mail (his address it at the bottom of the page) to tell him you appreciate his sentiments, etc. It will encourage him to do more pro-bike/pro-common sense columns, not only because of the "feel good" on pats on the back, but also because part of how newspapers favor or disfavor columnists is based on how much response e-traffic their columns generate. Let's send a message to the CoCo Times (and the sister news outlets) that there is a sizeable population of responsible and active cyclists out here.

It is amazing, but true, that motorists need specific reminders to not go into the oncoming lane around a blind curve. Good work to everyone involved in getting this thing going. Hopefully there will be some behavior change as a result.
