Niles Canyon One Day Closure - Oct 11

Just saw this bit of info. They are closing the road to cars for a day, hikers and bikers only, plus will discuss with interested parties plans for a separate trail/path for hikers and bikers. Nile Cyn is on my list of "roads to avoid." Might have to make my way down there and check it out. I know the Valley Spokesmen are leading a ride down there.

Info here

Niles Canyon is a narrow nasty road. Used to commute through it many years ago. I even rode part of the way a few times, not much fun. Interesting that they would close it for a day. Is there that much local interest? A bike path through would be nice but since I don't live near it anymore it wouldn't be very useful for me.

I think its closed the 10th as well.... . Atleast that's what the electronic signs say. I just drove through this morning. Niles Cyn is the reason I don't bike commute to work... it's just a bad road. My wife came upon a cyclist death on there not too long ago... so that didn't help. I welcome anything they can do to make it safer.

Thank you for the info. It'll be nice to not have to avoid Niles for once. I really hope they make it more usable for non-cars.

Always wanted to ride up Niles canyon, but there are so many safer and nicer roads to ride in bay area. So this will be a perfcet time to finally give it a try.

Safer?? I expect dog walkers with retractable leashes, joggers with headsets, skateboarders, strollers, etc. All the obstacles one usually sees on a MUP. I cycle through Niles Canyon frequently, but I think I'll avoid it this weekend.

(Well, I sure am becoming a curmudgeon in my old age, aren't I?) ;-)

I used to do all my riding on iron horse trail. I got to see lone joggers take up the full trail, walkers zig-zag the trail, people cross it without looking for traffic and groups of people block the whole trail while they chat. Still... As much as they can be annoying they are all easily solvable by slowing down, using voice/bell. I'll take those over getting hit by a car or truck any day.

Perfect day to do a Niles Cyn/Calaveras loop. Question is, CW or CCW (from Fremont)?

Was more interesting than I thought it would be. Lots of people came out for this event, both on bikes and walking, and there were quite a few organizations that had information booths set up with maps, flyers, water bottles, etc. Certainly any other day would be better if you just want a quick training ride through the canyon, but it was nice to see all the people and enjoy the area at a more leisurely pace.

I put my route and some pictures up at:
Shannon - Niles Canyon (car-free day) - TripTrackbut note that the pictures aren't showing up at the right places on the map (something went wrong with the time synch.).

Bah! I missed it :/ Ended up doing my ride yesterday and elsewhere. A dad's life get shuffled and busy sometimes. Very glad to hear there was a good turnout though. I'm curious to see how things progress.

I was thinking it might be low turn-out... boy was I wrong. Too bad because I wanted to try for some PR's on the TT bike... not a chance. It was amateur hour out there and very dangerous. I was riding around 11am or so. Kids galore with all kinds of death wobble going on.. it really reminded me or that company golf outing where you see people that try to play after not playing for 20 years kind of thing. Saw a guy just do a u-turn in front of this girl and she T-boned him. Walkers just sightseeing on the bridges then just turning into bike traffic without even looking.... Seriously give me cars any day.

It was an enjoyable day. Wasn't expecting such a crowd. Nice to see the many families out and about having fun. Did feel a little like the GGB with the same type of users even the matching kit team time trialists . But I'll take Sunday over a normal niles canyon. Man, it's such a nice road that was easier to appreciate on Sunday.

Hello! Managed to grab me in several of the pictures! I'm on the Bianchi with a yellow jersey.
