Livermore to Sierra Rd via Calaveras. The day was absolutly beautiful! More cyclists than cars on Calaveras. On the way back, we decided to tackle Welch Creek.

Dang, my legs are a bit sore this morning.

Beaker 03-28-10 02:25 PM

Nice job Jim. I think about riding Welch Creek again from time to time.

Then I quickly think about something else. Welch and Marin avenue hold a special place in my cycling memory, one that is reserved for episodes of brutality and near death experiences.

rode from Jamestown to Lake Don Pedro and back... it was really warm today... guess I'd better get use to that again! :p

Headlands. I figured I'd do it one last time before Conzelman closes til "October". I shed a single tear at the top :P

I came down with something terrible two weeks ago which kept me from pretty much doing anything except going to work even though I shouldn't have. I'm still feeling a little sick with a gross cough, but yesterday I got out for the first time since the 14th.

I took it easy. Did 19.something km. Also, I stopped at Root Farms and went in to buy something! tprevost, you should know that it's just as cute inside as out and they have a lot of unique things... mostly nuts and candies and some jam type items. I'll admit that I was a little disappointed that the person working in there wasn't dressed in traditional clothes.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...032710_003.jpg

Anyhow, the ride was easy and I felt great aside from the hacking.

Today I was a bit more optimistic about how I felt and wanted to take advantage of the great weather. I headed out to the east into the "wind" so that I'd have an easy ride home. I'd said yesterday that I'd go for 30-40 km today. I got in 42.06 km.

I felt okay until about km 30 when my right knee really started giving me trouble and my back started hurting. I've recently messed with the height of my saddle because it felt too low. I think now it's too high. I'd really like a propper bike fitting, but I can't justify spending the money since I'm not that serious about riding.

Don't we have lovely pavement here?
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...032810_006.jpg

At least the entire road isn't like that... only the part I ride on.

Today, I teamed up with NorCal BF member MarkoPolo to assist him with his birthday ride. We started at the foot of the Santa Cruz Mtns, climbed up and over, enjoyed a long beautiful descent into Capitola on the beach, had a bite to eat at a wonderful bakery, and climbed back up and over to get back to the car.

Along the way we enjoyed stunning weather, shady redwood-lined mountain roads, the beach, and cascading mountain streams. What a day to be out and about - about 5,000' of climbing all told, and 55 or so miles (we had a few to spare).

Rich - you missed a good one. Hope you had fun in Nashville!

A few random pics for you to enjoy....

Yin and yang - if you descend, you gotta climb back out:

Nice ride +report BBM.

I'm imagining Mrs BBM looking through your snaps..."hey that's Monterey peninsula"..[slap]..."what? Really, it's Monterey peninsula"...[slap]..."ow! really, it's in the distance if you look hard"...

Believe it or not, that girl was sitting in front of the blue chair and stood up when I took the picture. Good point though - maybe I'll delete it. :)

Ummm...... there. All fixed. :innocent:

Beaker 03-28-10 08:22 PM

Phew! Nicely done there. This is you on the right, as well, isn't it?

Spent time on and about the local bike trail today. Healing is progressing, though not nearly as fast as I'd like. I'm going to be optimistic about next weekends' ride and expand it a bit. If it goes well, the week after will see more climbing.

DRietz 03-28-10 09:28 PM

Lapped Chabot today. In a less-than-desirable time.

Wait, I missed it. Send me that picture!

Thanks for the escort on my birthday ride BBM. Despite the elevation graph, the first descent down Soquel San Jose road and the last one down Old Santa Cruz road are worth all the uphill. The long climb is Eureka Canyon and, while filled with chewed up road and seemingly endless, only gets steep in a few places.

Plus we got to stop at Gayle's Bakery, and as BBM's pictures show - Capitola beach to view, the, ummm... scenery. :innocent:

Here's the route trace...

You didn't miss much - just a shot of the big.... mountains over on the Monterey Penninsula.

Uhhh, Bossman, I think you forgot about the trail of crumbs you left in C&V :D

Funny thing, those aren't the same mountains I see on my rides.

DRietz 04-02-10 12:32 PM

Um. It's not the weekend, but it is spring break.

Just a note of warning to anybody considering Chabot today. Ride hard through the last of the first mile on Bass Cove trail to avoid stink. I feel pretty crappy after a crappy ride.

Should be a good enough hint.

Lanceoldstrong 04-03-10 10:23 PM

78 mile loop with 5700 feet of climbing up around Pleasants Valley Rd and Moscovite Corners (HWY 121 and 128) with Cardiac Hill, Lake Berryessa and a little thing called Mix Canyon.

Garmin Trace: http://connect.garmin.com/activity/28872140

Mix Canyon is one tough nut. I hit it at mi. 50 of a 78 mile ride today. Way harder than Sierra Road. Mix gains over 2100 feet in just 4 miles.
Begins at 358 feet elevation to "summit" is 2717 feet for an approximate average grade of 9% for the whole climb. Topping out at 23%
I made it all the way. I can't believe how many times I thought, Oh good a break, & looked down to see it was 11%. 17-18% is common on this climb.

For those of you who have ridden Oakville Grade, just imagine that Mix is a little steeper and 3 miles longer.

With 3/10 of a mile to go my legs just shut down for a second at the 23% section. I fell over like a tree. I got back up and finished after a quick drink and a GU.
I guess my legs were feeling the lingering effects of the Solvang Double last weekend.

Battered but not beaten, victorious at the top of Mix.

A fun 65 miler with a baseball theme this year (including hot dogs at the rest stops.) We followed it up with a visit to some local wineries.

My buddy Midland. (aka Steve)
He also made it to the top.

Beaker 04-03-10 11:42 PM

Congrats, LO. That's epic - you should slap a big "Mix" sticker on the side of your bike now. No need to do it twice, right?

I've got to try that climb some time - maybe.

I did Party Pardee as well. I was with my buddy Roy whom Curtis has met previously. We looked for you and Tracy/Wayne but didn't see you.
We started at 8:00am on the dot and got back around 12:20, total 3:58 rolling time.

I even wore my NorCal jersey! I was expecting a hello from a few folks, but nope. I must have been lost in the sea of riders.

It was a beautiful day and fun ride, but I don't know that I've ever seen so many high-end big-bucks bikes being ridden so awkwardly. I don't mean slow, I mean woobley, and clipping out for corners, or two days before a stop while dragging a foot. I'm not used to seeing that by riders with bikes that cost three times what my car does.
