Been a while since I contributed anything here. Diablo Challenge today, better than my dry run last weekend, but still a waaayyyy off what I should be capable of. Still, after a lack of climbing and a few extra lbs I collected while dealing with my collarbone, work, life the universe and everything else that keeps you off the bike, I'll take it.
The real reason for posting though is that I wanted to extend my appreciation to bikingshearer who personally marshaled my backpack to the summit (along with a few others...) and welcomed me to the top with a resounding "Beeeaaaakeerrr!". Thank you sir, much appreciated. Nice to also meet caloso in person at long last. |
62 Miles with 5256 climbing. A nice fast, 1 quick gas station pit stop, hilly metric.
Up Pig Farm, Up The 3 Bears, Up Wildcat, Up South Park, along Grizzly Peak, down Pinehurst through the redwoods into Canyon and Up Reliez Valley Rd. with Midland. Except for a stop light here and there we only stopped once for a quick drink buy at gas station. This time of year when you don't start until noon you have to get on it. http://app.strava.com/rides/24334466# |
Today was a great ride. Epic. 102mi, 7000 ft. A really big loop around Folsom Lake. Surprised I got so many PR's. On Prospectors I was just trying to keep the pedals turning over. My wife came along and she just killed it. It was her hardest ride to date. http://app.strava.com/rides/24327976

As for me, that was my worst time in 4 attempts, but by the time I reached the Rock City, I knew I didn't have it so I just tried to enjoy the ride and take in the sights. |
My first time posting in NorCal. Saturday I did the roundtrip between Vasona Dam, and the Great Mall. I wouldn't even have thought that it was within riding distance, it seems so far driving from the office by the airport. It was my record farthest ride to date, and with my off round trip distance from home, ended up being a bit over 40 miles.
A coworker reminded me of the bayside trail, and I'd completely forgotten that it was there! The closest I got to it on my last ride was within 3 miles, I could've totally gone there and added a ton to my ride. I'm excited about that. I'm thinking I might ride the bayside trail as far as I can tolerate and then just jump on the train back to the south bay, fun! |

That is further than most department store bikes get ridden, total. Then their short lives end up with them leaned against a shed in the side yard. Forever. |
Grizzly Century in North Fork. 10,000 feet in 99 miles. Once I saw the route was going to be shy of the full 100, I was simply too tired to care. Two real fun descents however. Nice scenery as well. The ride seemed like you were climbing the whole day, but the final climb up to Cold Springs summit (7,300 or so) killed me. Long day in the saddle, but the blast downhill to Bass lake was pretty fun.
|
I did that ride in 2006. I felt the same way - seemed like I was climbing all day.

I saw more than one person come in behind you who all but barfed up a lung at the top, including a couple who got three feet past the line, stopped and could not move for a minute or two. Doing better in the event than in the dry run qualifies as a good ride. Well done. |
It's been two weeks since the Knoxville Double. I've done my usual bike commute at low speed since then, but actually riding for fun? I'd moved on. Biking, apparently was not for me after all.
But I'm pleased to report that I did a pleasant 50 mile/3K climbing ride Saturday and a 25 miler Sunday. So maybe I'll keep the bike after all. I think I'll even show up for Foxy's Fall next weekend. |

I rode with JoelS and 15 others on his Cotherin Ranch Ride. Since I'm not racing or training to race my hilly rides are few and far between. This ride certainly demonstrated to me that I need more JoelS rides.
The route is scenic, very pretty, and most of the roads are good. I highly recommend it. |
114 Miles and 3589 climbing. Concord to Livermore, to Tracy and back to Concord.
From Tracy went back to Livermore via super steep Coral Hollow/Tesla climb. Saw some new roads out that way. With Midland (aka Steve) http://app.strava.com/rides/25073157 |
Saturday - a 40 mile loop with a samll but elite portion of the Dublin Cyclery Ride Group from Dublin to Sunol, over Palomares, over Norris Canyon, back to Dublin. Gorgeous weather, fun ride.
Sunday - vegged out at home trying to get rid of the cold that sprang up. :( |
Foxy's Fall Century: with Midland and we saw Cccolew and MiLilpony
Moving Time: 06:00:26 / Elapsed Time: 06:11:00 We rode em like we stole em. We slacked off like laggards for 10 minutes 44 seconds. Just one stop to fill bottles and take arm warmers off, then some incidental stops like an odd red light here and there. My 2nd Century in a week's time. Last Sunday's 114 was a "Foxy's Training Ride" with Midland and then this on Saturday. He's baaaaaack. http://app.strava.com/activities/25601466# |
My friend Karen came up to visit her parents, and we decided to throw in a ride while she is here. We did Metcalf and Quimby. Great ride, nice country-style roads. We had a lot of fun, except I couldn't find a good route to get back from Alum Rock to Lake Almaden Park. Gotta find an alternative, because that return route really sucked.

Wife was out of town so we didn't make Foxy's on the tandem. I decided to do a local 100K including Henry Coe and Metcalf.
http://app.strava.com/rides/25596537 This was a bit of a challenge for my old bones, but also very satisfying. I hadn't been down Silver Creek road for at least 25 years. We used to run from Silver Creek HS to either the Packard ranch or UTC gates, about 21 miles R/T. Wasn't a soul on those roads and now it's suburbia - go figure. Metcalf was a bear especially after Coe, but I am now 7 out of 14 in the 65 y/o+ group:D |
Saturday: No ride. Devoted myself to domestic duties and that was what was needed.
Sunday: Rode my age+ with Mr. RR on the tandem, and his friend Danny Thomas, whom some of you might know (he's 15 mi. from the Raleigh/Durham airport, has done AOMM multiple times, sports a Carolina Brewery Company jersey). To Mr. RR's credit, he hasn't ridden more than 15 miles since the first of the month, and we had not been on the tandem since early Sept. So the ride was just what I wanted and needed, and the ensuing meal out was excellent. All in all, a fine day. |
Saturday, I did a ridiculously-easy 22 (27 if you count me starting at home) miles with the church guys out to Palo Alto Baylands and back. I took the singlespeed just for fun.
Sunday, I took the boy to church in the trailer (I wasn't going to fit in the car with the inlaws here, and he didn't need much enticement to come with Daddy)... 5 miles r/t. Not terribly often I get to ride during the weekend at all. |
Sunday 50 Miles and 4500 ft. climbing on a great lollipop shaped route of Midland's design with Sierra Road as the highlight.
Start in Pleasanton, Up Calaveras along the reservoir , down into Milpitas, to San Jose and UP Serra Rd. Down Felter, Up the Calaveras Wall and back along the reservoir rollers to Pleasanton. http://app.strava.com/activities/26357809# 3rd best time up Sierra. Now I need a nap. |
Did the shop ride today. Only 8 of us total, so the double-pace lines were fun, fast and steady. Beautiful weather for it. too. A couple of the guys got frisky on the ride back to the start, and I was nearly red-lining in my effort to catch them. Catch them I did, and that was exhilarating. Reassuring to know I have the legs to put on speed (over a short distance) when I need it.

Sierra rd. with LanceOldstrong. Why do I alway's underestimate that climb? it's nasty.
