27-28miles out and back - Moraga up Pinehurst to Skyline/Grizzly Peak and then took a spin down Claremont and back up again. I knew that Claremont was a pretty good climb, but it had me reaching for lower cogs than I expected - a good new climb to add to my list!

Finished the month with a 60 mile Delta Jam yesterday. The last 8 miles I broke away from the group because there was a sweet tailwind and never looked back. I should have! My silence was broken after 5 miles by my much older nemesis Bob... Cat and mouse all the way back. I pushed really close to the vomit threshold. Felt normal about an hour after getting home. It was a great ride though!!!! 80 degrees maybe?

Managed 582 miles for May.

Patched together something interesting.

I left home in Santa Clara and headed for Milpitas, looking to do a modified version of the Palomares/Calaveras loop that Ron led (okay, planned) about a month ago. I didn't want to do quite that many miles, but wanted more climbing.

I had meant to do some climbing yesterday but didn't.

Got caught up in the F1 race on TV today, so I didn't get out till after noon. Who knew it was gonna be hot today?

So I rode into Milpitas, took North Park Victoria and Paseo somethingorother, then took Niles Canyon to Palomares. Climbed Palomares where there were massive ladybug swarms. So strange. Ran into a nice couple on the hill who were from Pleasanton.

Palomares was shorter than I remembered, I thought it went to 2k feet. Woo. To cut off some mileage, I just came right back down Palomares, and took Niles Canyon into Sunol - yep, Niles Canyon traffic suuucks.

Took Calaveras south. Man I don't remember going so fast up Calaveras, I kept it in the middle chainring the whole time where I'm quite sure I was grinding at much lower speed last time.

Dropped down the wall and thought "that's not so long" (200ft elevation) so I turned around and climbed it. Yep, steep, but not so bad. Probably a huge PITA if you just climbed the 800 or so feet up Felton though.

I wanted to add on some hills so I took Felton uphill and knew it turned into Sierra and looped back around. What I didn't know was that it was the hill from hell that never quits. I only had a really really really vague idea of the distance of this loop and it was much longer than I thought. As I was taking a break a guy with a red jersey came by and told me about how much further I had to go to the flat, and he warned me about the descent on Sierra.

Well, it flattened out, but then climbed again. I got to Sierra around 6pm, and was annoyed to see it kept climbing, but I wanted to give it a try. Scenery was amazing, I like the view a lot better than from Hamilton because you are so much closer. Fortunately there wasn't much more climbing and then the looong descent. Oh god, so glad I didn't climb this. I even hated the descent, it was just so hard to keep my speed down, and my neck killed me. I stopped 500ft from the bottom (right where it straightens out) and met a guy named Sebastian from Miami who was on his way UP. He asked me how much more it climbed (since he had only done 250-300ft so far and it was after 6). I told him good luck and we parted ways. Hopefully he'll find his way over to BF.

Rode home, man the ride down Tasman is always sooo much further than I expect.

75.64 miles, 5:37, 13.42avs. 4970 feet of climbing (man it felt like so much more, I could have done a 60 mile out and back on Hamilton and had more climbing!)

Where'd I ride? I rode in hell.

At least it felt like hell. It was the first ride in near 100 degree heat for me this year.

Diablo repeats: From the Safeway at Ignacio Valley Rd. and Oak Grove Rd. to the junction, then down the south side, then up the south side and down the north side. I didn't have a GPS so I don't know how many feet of climbing I did. Total miles: 29.68, avg. 12.9 mph. No hammering; maybe some sprints up the quick, steep parts. It was hot and I have new tan lines despite generous use of sunscreen. I had a blast and can't wait to do it again.

One item of note: coming down the north side, between the 2000' and 1000' markers, a female coyote stepped into the middle of the road and stopped. She was so focused on her prey (whatever that was) that she didn't even notice me come to nearly a complete stop and ogle her. Her teats were swollen so I knew she had pups somewhere. I really, really wanted a picture but was afraid I'd blow her mojo, so I coasted oh-so-slowly past her as she made her way to the other side of the road. I was within 6' of her. Wow.

What a ride! Finally, I got to ride west of Skyline. I did the 120K route for the Tour de Cure that started from Palo Alto, climbed Kings Mountain, Pescadero, Stage, and Tunitas Creek. First, the stats:

5:55 Total Exercise Time
5:33 Total Ride Time
146 BPM Avg
169 BPM Max
3930 Calories
76.3 Miles
13.7 Avg. Speed
37.5 Max Speed
69 Avg. Cadence
112 Max Cadence

I rode behind two Stanford studenet triathletes up Kings Mountain. They were on recovery, I think, andI was at cruise steady. It was fascinating, however, to hear them talking about their accomplishments (raced at the Worlds, ran a 4:40 first mile in a 3-mile meet).

From Kings Mountain, I think I went south to go west on 84. I've never descended there before, and couldn't beleive how peaceful it was. I started late (8 am), so there weren't any 120K riders to be seen. I didn't make any contact until I came to Pescadero climb. That was some climb. Nice scenery, and I think I might have ridden there before at the 2006 Sequoia Century. They all do blend together, I guess.

The wind and chill really picked up as I got close to the town of Pescadero. After exiting the lunch stop at Stage and Pescadero, the third climb of the day was anything but easy. I think I was really feeling that 2.5 hr run from Saturday at the first climb on Stage. Btw, I think I've heard the "three sisters" being mentioned before. I imagine that's used to describe the three climbs of Stage Road? Nevertheless, it was tiring, and I shamlessly went into the triple crank by the second climb on Stage Road.

Stage to the base of Tunitas Creek was uneventful (except for that persistent chill and wind). I got somewhat pumped when I heard this one group passing me exhorting themselves to go up Tunitas Creek in a hurried fashion: "well, that mountain isn't not going to climb itself, so let's get going!"

Tunitas Creek was not too steep, as i was pleasantly surprised. Of course, it was granny gear for me all the way. One interesting observation I overheard from one of the riders: it's nearly impossible to ride Tunitas with fresh legs. You can say that again!

I was a bit surprised at the potholes, fissures, rips, loose gravel I found on Tunitas Creek. A spontaneous strategy I adopted while climbing Tunitas: seated climb for 50 revolutions and 10 standing up. I only wish I had figured out how long the climb was, however, so I could at least pace myself. It felt like I was climbing in the dark and not knowing when it'd end.

Finally, Tunitas ended and I descended Kings, took Woodside, Whiskey Hill, Sandhill, and Junipero Serra back. I came home and raided that fridge like there was no tomorrow. Whew.

71 miles with 7K vert solo on Saturday: Grizzly Peak>Skyline>Redwood>Palomares and back. Palomares is one of my favorites. Good weather and good ride despite a swarm of ladybugs on Redwood!

Yesterday, 32 miles with 3K vert: Grizzly Peak>Wildcat>San Pablo Dam Rd.(they are repaving it right now and it is HORRIBLE heading toward Moraga>Canyon>Pinehurst>Skyline>Grizzly.

I'm thinking about the Canyon Classic Century on Saturday.....

If you do decide on the Canyon Classic, please give me a shout. There are currently about 4 or 5 of us from BF doing it.

Bethany State recreation Area Aqueduct Bike Path

I rode part of the California Aqueduct bike Path this morning. The path runs from from Bethany Reservoir
State Recreation park to San Luis Creek (about 70 miles). I reckon this would make a great self supported century we should try in the fall. (Lunch at Patterson). It is flat as pancake but the wind and heat can make it very tough. The water does seem to have a major cooling effect even on the hottest days.

Did another solo trip over Hamilton to Isabel Creek and back, Saturday morning, logged another 7k vert, after doing that same trip thursday. No time for creativity or longer rides since I had to be back home by noon yesterday to get ready for a wedding. Hopefully next weekend I'll have time for a longer ride with some more climbing. Today is relaxation time

I went up and down Kings Mtn to get ready for the Giro, then rode down to Los Altos before heading back home. 66 miles. All of it pretty nice, except for the 5 miles of headwinds on Canada, and the car that turned left RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME at the intersection of 92 and lower Skyline. They almost had me as a passenger. I gave them the full bird treatment.

I haven't been on a bike since Wednesday.

took the track bike out and did some laps on Canada Rd. from Roberts Market (woodside) to 92...four laps in 4 hours with a 10-15 min powerbar break.

loved it! a bit windy going north past edgewood, but it was the first time I got to use my ipod while riding...great training

I did a short loop this evening. Up Kings Mountain, south on Skyline, then west down Bear Gulch until it dead-ends. Back up to Skyline and the down Hwy 84 towards home. I often avoid dead end roads and hence this was my first time on Bear Gulch. Highly recommended, especially in the late afternoon/evening. I was treated to gorgeous views of the setting sun filtering across the road through redwood trees. Then the road breaks out into grassy rolling hills and I could see the a layer of fog out over the coast with the setting sun casting red hues everywhere.

31 miles, 3500' climbing
