I've had guest here all week and didn't get to ride at all. They left yesterday so I finally got in a run on my typical Pacifica route on my cyclocross bike that takes me to the top of Montara mountain and back. I'm getting kind of bored with the same routine, but at least I set record times today - both on the way up and way down!

I raced today -- first solo race since early March. Details on my blog.
Reader's Digest version: Nerves, mental games, wind, nerves, mental games, wind, wind, wind, nerves, guts, determination. Finished about the middle of 50 riders (won't know for sure until results are posted), worked my *ss off and finished strong. Best race to date. No matter my result, I'm very, very happy with my result. I'm back!:D |
Yes, I do need to get back up to SF for a ride! I'll keep an eye on the nor cal forum for upcoming events...

Busy weekend, but still managed to get out for rides both days. :)
Yesterday I did this loop: Pescadero / Wurr - Butano Cut-off - Cloverdale - Gazos Creek - 1 - Bean Hollow - Pescadero / Wurr. Stopped at the arts fair in Pescadero while I was there. :thumb: 31.5 miles, ~1800'. Today I did Pescadero (Haskins Hill) - Alpine - 35 - 84 - Pescadero (Haskins Hill). 31 miles, ~4500'. |
Sebastapol Tour d'Organics vegan century.
35 miles with my 9yo daughter. Perfect course for the Bike Friday tandem and really fun. http://lh4.ggpht.com/_hSZo5vjiPmQ/So...0/P8160037.JPG |

Didn't do any riding yesterday - went shopping for backpacking gear instead. Finally have all of our stuff for our first backpacking trip. Today I rode up in Auburn. Did Clementine, Connector, Divide Loop, Connector, Stonewall and Confluence for a nice 23 mile loop with 3000 ft of climbing :D

My brother and I did the Metric century at the Tour of Napa today. What a great ride with great food and entertainment!
|
I did the 100-mile route of the Tour of Napa.
I'm kind of underwhelmed by that area. It was nice enough, but my enthusiasm wasn't super high. Michael and I missed one of the out-back legs and ended up with <100. My totals for the day were 85.4miles in 5:11 or so. 16.4 average. Thinking about it, we had 5:11 ride time and only about 20 minutes of "rest". So, that with the good pace made it a worthwhile day. |
Did the Taxi weekend tour ... nice low key weekend, for once. With the fires burning, it was another excuse to do a couple of rides in the city ... and welcome back, Pete.

Next year we're doing the century, definetely. I just wasn't sure since I was a newbie. |

It was very laid back. This was my first time and at one of the rest stops all I heard was a bunch of hem and haw over Ink Grade. One guy even told me to "watch what I eat" or else "it all might come up on that climb". Well, I climbed Ink grade and at the end I was thinking "Is that it?".

Two (relatively) easy rides this weekend. We missed the Taxi tour, both days.
Saturday: Tandem, Mt Tam loop, 50 miles apx 5000 ft Sunday: Ruth on her solo, me on her fixed gear (fitted a longer stem), local ride, 24 miles apx 2100 ft I did ride Bunker Hill on the fixed gear (42x15 with 700x28 tires = 74.9 gear inches). For a hill whcih is normally not too bad (just a little bit of grunt at the end), on the fixie it was HARD! I thought I was going to snap the handlebar or a pedal axle. It was Ruthie's first time cresting Bunker Hill on her solo bike, even though we have many times on the tandem. Here's the specs for Bunker Hill, short and sweet (steep), it starts out relatively easy, but ends with apx 1/4 mile of 15-16%: http://graphics.stanford.edu/~lucasp...unkerhill.html |
Ink Grade is easy? Either you guys are from a parallel universe, or I am, 'cuz in my world, Ink Grade is not easy.
Enough of that. Bigbossman and I managed to squeeze in a Sunday afternoon jaunt. Starting from my abode in the northern reaches of the Democratic People's Republic of Berkeley, we went up Spruce St., through Tilden Park, down Wildcat Canyon, into Orinda, thence to Moraga, up the north side of Pinehurst, down Skyline/Old Tunnel and back to start in North Berk. 30 miles or so, something around 2,300 feet of climbing, one Peet's break, one pee break, one water break, several :what the heck was that noise?" breaks, lots of good conversation, several hills, several great descents, and a great ride in the bag. And BBM never complained once about the climbing ... yeah, right. Oh, and the Ron Cooper was back on the road for the first time after the Marin County Disaster of several months ago. It road great. :thumb: |

But really, the anticipation had me worried because I was thinking it was going to be much more menacing like Hicks Rd. or Metcalf and the like, which I definetely have to take breaks on. My daily loop takes me up Bernal Rd. here in San Jose which is about 7.2% for 2.1 miles. |

I did the Eagle Cycling Club’s Tour of Napa Valley on Sunday. It was a big undertaking. The century involved three big hills, with the nastiest (Ink Grade Road--9-11% for 4 miles) occurring at the 65 mile mark.
I was not in proper shape, but survived. I tore up the first 50, but the last 50 were tough. My right quad started to really tighten up whenever I left the saddle on the 2nd hill. They served lunch before the big hill, which gave me time to stretch and rest (and inflate my 80psi rear tire). Even so, I had to stop at least three times on Ink Grade. My left hamstring joined my right quad in telling me that it was time to go home, but the rest of the ride was downhill or rollers, so I stuck it out. The views were beautiful and there was lots of food, water and Cytomax (thank you, sponsor). It took me FAR longer than I expected (almost 10 hours). There was a bagpiper playing at the top of the first climb—nice touch. |
I did 55 miles with some climbing. San Mateo to Woodside, up Kings Mtn, down 35 to 84W, up West OLH, 35 to 84E,down to Woodside, and home. It was beautiful out there, so beautiful in fact that I snapped phonecam a picture of the view on OLH just before it heads into the trees, and sent it to my wife to make her envious.
My climbing legs are slowly returning. The last time I did Kings Mtn, I just rode down to 84 and home, and my legs were toasted (thigh cramps when I stood on the pedals going up the Alameda near Aragon High). This time, I am pretty sure I did it faster, and added the climb up West OLH, and my legs feel way better. All in time for the rainy season! |
I was one of the hmmmers and hawers. This was my 2nd century. I made it halfway up on my first century (start/finish was halfway up). This time it kicked my tail. I'm gonna hurt tomorrow.
