One of the things that's great about bicycling is that you can do it right from your door. Tricia and I love riding new places, but always feel a touch bad when we use a car to get there.

I've always enjoyed a ride up Mt. Diablo. Every time seems somehow epic. Usually we drive over to Arbolado Park and ride from there. Monday, my first day of spring break, I thought I'd try to ride Mt. Diablo from home. There are... issues.

The big one is that there is no good way to get there. One involves riding on the freeway a bit. Not impossible, but not fun. It would be possible to ride Marsh Creek Road, but the commuter raceway that the otherwise delightful road has become would make it a suicide mission. The remaining route is over Kirker Pass Road, another mad-commuter zone. Today I thought I could wait out the crazy commute and ride over, then come back before the rush. It worked. I am still alive.

Bariani RR 35+ 4's. Felt good throughout, dabbled with some pack pulling nonsense and finished with the lead group 26th of 70 (absence of sprint, oh dear). Left the race grinning like a Cheshire cat though. As it should be.

Somebody must have fired off a memo that bike season officially started because today was about three times as busy as the last few months of weekends. I did Kings Mountain and Old La Honda East climbs and there were more people on them than I've seen since September. And everybody seemed happy as clams to be riding. There were half a dozen sitting at the top of KMR/Tunitas and about a dozen at the tom of OLH.

I've started doing rides that I've dubbed "Holy Sh*t" climbs. Several weeks ago, it was Sierra Road, followed by Welch Creek. This past Saturday, it was Bohlman/On Orbit, followed by Hicks. I can still feel fatigue in my legs two days after. Stats were so so .... 61 miles, 5700 feet climbing, but then again, there was about 1.5 miles of 15-20% grades, and some at 25%.

I did the Los Vaqueros Dam Time Trial yesterday. Turnout was disappointing given the new pavement and more challenging course. All your NorCal folks need to make an effort to attend next year. It was well run, low key, and family friendly. Plus, the entry fee was only $10 and with that, I got a shirt, water bottle, cow bell, and snacks at the finish.

It was short (only 3.4 miles), but that doesn't really matter when you have 40 people showing up all going at maximum effort.

I finished 14th overall. The race was last held in 2010 where I finished an embarrassing 44th of 45. I had only been riding my road bike for about 3 months at that point.

I've never even heard of that event. It would have been fun, and short enough that my wife and I could have taken turns watching the kids while the other rode the course.

I think there were only about ten of us that first year... pretty much everybody medalled in one category or another.

You all definitely need to come out next year! The cap is 85 riders, so we've got room.

For once, I got two good rides in over a weekend. Saturday, from Sunol out Calaveras to the the top of the Wall/Plunge with MarkoPolo. Bigbossman would have come along, but he decided he would rather spend his weekend shooting at turkeys than riding with turkeys. A goodly number of poppies and lupines and other wildflowers. Not quite 30 miles.

Sunday. from Walnut Creek to Danville to Highland and around the Collier Canyon/Carneal/Manning/Highland loop, then retracing steps back to WC with friend Carl and his friend Ken. As an added bonus, DiabloScott gave a cheery "hello" from his car as we were just about finished. 44 miles. Great weekend.

The Amstel Gold today was 156 miles with 13,000 feet and 31 named climbs.
A climb came about every 7 minutes at the speeds the pros ride.
I was inspired to imitate.

They rode The Amstel Gold, I rode the Amstel Light.
Out and back from Martinez: Pig Farm Hill, The 3 Bears, turn around at San Pablo Dam Rd and go back over the 3 Bears and Pig Farm Hill.
30 miles w/3171 feet and 8 named climbs.The Amstel (very) Light.

Nothing as impressive as LOS but lots of smiles per mile with teammates & friends with whom I hadn't ridden since January.

This 30 Days of Biking challenge has inspired me to get out more, to appreciate even a mile around my neighborhood, and I'm having a blast.
