I used to go to Sac City College, but this was before I got into road cycling. I have to say from a cyclists standpoint that road doesn't seem very safe, especially since, at least when I used to take Freeport, a lot of people drove really fast, and the bike lanes didn't look very well maintained:(

Not a good day. Started out OK, although legs felt kind of bleh. Felt better on Kings, but things went down hill from there. Slowly was loosing power and made a wrong choice of going down 84, to climb WOLH. Climbing that little hill out of Woodside to Stanford I came to a decision and called for a ride from Los Altos. Barely made it there. I was riding in recovery zone and felt like absolute crap. Not sure if it's three consecutive days for 60 milers or what, but this was my usual Sunday route.

I also ran over a squirrel on the way back near Woodside. :( I was munching on a banana when this suicidal fur ball dashed across the road right under my front wheel. I couldn't swerve or bunny hop over it because of the banana in my right hand. It continued running in to the bushes, but I am pretty sure it suffered fatal internal damage.

Aww, UD, that sounds real sucky, and very out-of-character for you. Sorry your ride wasn't fun.

Just trying to get in some maintenance rides (5-15 miles). Been sick off and on for a bit, but recovering in time for the new year.

Got in a 50 miler out of Livermore that included climbing up Marsh Creek, North Flynn and Patterson Pass. Good times.

I guess i need to HTFU but I dislike this weather (always with some decent chance of rain, worried about getting my new road bike drivetrain dirty).
Anyway, yesterday about 30 miles. I explored some little hills around Saratoga/Los Gatos, like Peach Hill and Ojai.

MarkoPolo 12-28-09 09:47 PM

I extended my Christmas holiday through today thinking it would be the last chance to get in a long ride before the weather turned wet.

The skies were overcast when I left the house, but the weather report said the rain should hold off so I headed up Hwy 9 to Saratoga Gap. About 2/3 of the way up the fog got thick and the temps dropped. Right at the top the raindrops started. I Thought about high-tailing it back down the hill and home, but being the optimist I made the assumption that it was just a few sprinkles - boy was that wrong.

Turned north along Skyline, then down Page Mill in a steady rain. I am no great descender, but with wet roads, I'm even more cautious, so the payoff for doing the climb was riding the brakes to scrub off speed - and feet that felt like blocks of ice by the time I got to bottom of Page Mill.

Headed for Los Altos for hot coffee and a muffin at Peets and towards home on Foothill, where I got my first flat in 6 months (rear tire of course). Found a tree to hide out from the rain while I changed the tube and bolted back home to Saratoga for a long hot shower. 42 miles, 3500+ feet of climbing. Stupid weathermen! :notamused:

I turned onto Freeport Blvd from Pocket Road, meaning at the very southern-most edge of what passes for civilization in Sacto. Within a quarter mile or so the road narrows from a divided four lane road to a country two lane one, goes under the I-5 freeway, passes that big ol' honkin' water tower, and becomes a rural highway. The people went fast, but there wasn't enough traffic for it to be a problem. I'm not sure that would be the case on a summer weekend late afternoon, though.

That road is about as quick an urban-to-rural chamge as I've seen. One pedal stroke, and the passing cars are rolling thumping bass sooper-dooper woofer machines. The next pedal stroke, and you hear "Dueling Banjoes" wafting on the breeze . . . .

Dear Mr. TV Weather Person:

I just got done shovelling a foot and a half of "partly cloudy" off my driveway . . . .

Ah yes, the days of community college, those were the days /sigh...

Did a 33 miler today from Lafayette to Blackhawk and back. I am now officially setting a new personal best as far as yearly mileage is concerned. I have exceeded my best from last year by a whopping 6 miles. Still a couple days left but the weather doesn't look friendly.

acaurora 12-29-09 09:28 PM

Don't worry. Starting next week, you'll have 365 days to beat 33 miles, which will come to pass. I remember when I was first starting road cycling I thought 20 miles was a lot, and lately I've been doing 50+. It's all a numbers game :)

Beaker 12-29-09 09:45 PM

Last road ride before Jan1 - SBM repeats with BlastRadius and Offtheback. Weird fog band covered half the hill to begin with, starting out somewhat grey but ending up in glorious sunshine. Today felt good: also switched out my winter setup of Krylions on OP's/Specialized hubs for my W19's, PR3's and Aircomp tubes. Definitely felt lighter going up the climb: very nice indeed.

Uuugh!, 33 miles were today's ride. For the year I am now at 1,646.88 miles. Still low compared to many of you but it looks good in my book.

I am still thinking about the triple crown jersey for 2010, three more months to up the mileage before Solvang.

Good luck on your first race. GO BEAKER!!!!

I've got twice the mileage, at half your speed. :(

I have yet to reach any of my goals I set. Over T-day week I planned on 100 miles for the week, but didn't make it. Over winter break it was 200 miles. I think goals in the winter are a little more difficult to reach. I've been halted too many times by illness or poor weather.

On the bright side, I've only been riding again since last Feb/March (and until the last weekend in August I was riding only a mountain bike) and while I don't have a mileage count for the year, I can definitely tell that my body is different, particularly my rear and thighs. This is good enough for me!

I did finally get a computer for my road bike and the odo reads 306. This is since the middle of October. I suppose this is good for a newbie. For my winter break riding, it reads just over 84. Maybe I'll reach 100.

I got myself out for another short ride yesterday afternoon, around 12 something miles, can't remember. Looking off to the west, it looked like rain was coming in so I didn't want to get too far from home since I wasn't dressed for rain. Such is life. I was also a bit shaken after being chased by a really big dog. Nothing makes a cyclist kick it into high gear like that. Should I carry dog treats to throw at them? This guy was fast!

Looking forward to a new year starting off with a computer to keep track of my mileage.

Edited: The weather was cooperating this morning so I headed out! Got in 22.91 miles. Paying for it right now though.

Also... what made the county thing it would be a good idea to fill in potholes with loose gravely tar stuff (I have no idea what it's actually called)? I hit some on a really rough section of road and it literally jammed my front wheel. Got some caught up between the wheel and fork causing my wheel to lock up while I was riding. I almost crashed, but I wasn't going very fast anyhow. Had to remove the wheel to wipe it off the fork. I'm considering complaining to the county.

We missed our 1.1.10 Diablo ride, but made it on 1.2.10, so it still counts, right?
Foggy on the way up, but when we broke through the clouds it was like being on top of the world.
Here's Tricia (MyLilPony) on the cold wet way up.

And us at the top. Check those clouds!

Note to people who offer to make photos of us with my camera:
Think! Don't stick peoples heads in the middle of the frame and chop off their feet. Jeez! I can crop teh sky, but I can't add the stuff you missed

Curtis, I love that hill! Great job climbing.

I rode the Lake Loop with Chris, Deb, spamnrice, Scotty, and acuarora yesterday. Tomorrow is the Cothrin Ranch loop. 55 miles, and 4900 feet or so.

Flip that stem. You're way too upright! And where's your helmet?

JoelS 01-03-10 05:04 PM

Rode one of my favorite routes, the Cothrin Ranch Loop. Started in Folsom and headed out to Green Valley. Then EDH, Harvard, Silva to Latrobe. To Cothrin Ranch, French Creek, lunch at Subway, Deer Valley. The fun descent down Malcolm Dixon, and back to start.

Interesting that I got to the top of Cothrin Ranch and through the technical descent, and up the next hill before I realized I was in the big ring. Whoops. That 16% grade is tough in the big ring!

No ride data. My Garmin 305 has developed a new auto-shut off feature. It's going back to REI tomorrow. I think I'll get either a 500 or a 705 this time. It's my 2nd 305, and this one lasted less than 10 months.

http://connect.garmin.com/activity/21638737 finally got a few hours of riding since the newborn baby

I've heard quite a few people complain about the Garmin 305. Guess I should officially take it off my list of coveted gadgets.

No ride today, but I got in a short one yesterday. My computer said it was 9 something (can't remember exactly), but the same ride the other day the computer said 8.81. So speaking of computer issues... I think I may have one.

Anyhow, ride yesterday was chilly and foggy. Foggy enough that I had to keep wiping my glasses dry. And a little breezy too. I still hate wind.
