I did the "Tour of Napa Valley" century yesterday. It was my 5th century and by far the most attended. I think they had almost 2000 riders.
It was fun, but it got hot during the middle 1/3 of the ride. Before hitting the rather ugly climb on Ink Grade Rd (which wouldn't be that bad in cooler weather), I stopped at a store and got an ice cold can of Coke. Man, that tasted good!

Better'n I coulda done. If I had been there, my report would have been something like this: "NorCal Masters Crit Championships. Rode hard, was in the mix for a bit, then I blew up, got dropped, and heaved my guts out. Then on the second lap . . . ."

Did the 2-Wheel something or other Masters Crit Champoinship in cat3/4. Tons of fun. First corner made me realize I am not in 4's. ha ha. Moved my ass in to top ten and stayed there. Overall pace wasn't all that high. Tried for couple of prims, but best I could do was hang on. On final lap metromint guy sat up and I magically ended up almost at the end. Not kool. Put my big boy underwear on, and moved up in to the top 5ish or so. In last half of the lap things really picked up. Had hard time maintaining wheel and dropped few places. Someone was not happy about it on my wheel. Which he expressed by shouting. At least provided motivation to bring the pace up. Final sprint was trying to turn the dead legs around and finishing in top ten overall. Podium in the 4s (scored separately). Just 11 more points to upgrade. Don't feel like upgrading on top tens.

I've noticed that you hack and spit and rocketsnot a bit less than I do.
I'm not sure if my helmetcam picks up flatulence or not, but that might be further motivation to overdub harmonica music or something.

Stopped to help someone who was lost after her friends dropped her near Woodside. Realized even thought I ride the same roads almost everyday I have no idea what they are called. Managed to point her in the right direction.
While we were talking on a shoulder some guy in webcore kit blew past us going downhill, shouting something about us needing to move over. Kind of hard to do when there is a drop down hill when the roads ends. Apparently it was too much effort for him to move in to the road from a wide shoulder. Anyway caught up to him near Stanford Campus. He was riding on the white line, so I merged in to the road to pass him. Oh the irony.

with cccorlew, mylilpony and midland: The Hobo Roads 1/2 Hundo from Concord to the outskirts of Fairfield.
(thanks to bigbossman for giving me the immortal phrase "hobo roads")
55 mile out and back with some hills and a bit of wind. https://app.strava.com/rides/19849760
A good day out, my longest ride since my crash on 6/20.
The Northbound trip is on a frontage road east of 680 called Goodyear Road and the Southbound trip is on a frontage road on the west side of 680 called Lopes Road. These roads are way, way better than you would think. Going north 680 is bermed and above you so you barely notice it, going south it is below you and you look over it to sweeping views of the mothball fleet, the Carquinez straight and Mt. Diablo. Northbound we ran along a nice wetlands area and southbound we were on some make you work rollers through oak wooded hills.
Turn Around was a nice lunch at J & O Market/Deli in the Breckenridge development on the outskirts of Fairfield. Nice people, great patio for getting the grub on.

Did Vacaville Grand Prix. This is the third year in a row that I have done it. Interesting progression: almost last, top 30, and this year top 10, and got a prim. I think the biggest difference is I am eating better/more.

Anyone ride the trail along '80' from Columbus parkway up to Red Top? Drive by it all the time but I never see bikes on that first hill.

Don't mince words
I was W3/4. I've worked it as a course marshal for years. GFs signed up and challenged me.
Most. Fun. Race. Ever.
I had no fear and no expectations and had a blast. Finished Top 20, my best placing in a crit ever. Whee!
Most impressive performance: Larry Nolan. Took the Mast. P/1/2/35+ in a dominant sprint, and raced with the P/1/2 and didn't finish DFL. Beastly.

I started the Winters Road Race on Sat. as the domestique for my much stronger teammate. All I had to do was deliver her across the finish line. We had a plan.
Started behind the Jrs. who started with us but soon left us. I went out front, she was on my wheel, and the rest of them strung out in a long single line. I felt really good and had no problem pulling down the frontage road along the 505 (some of you have suffered, er, ridden this with us ). I pulled over 7 miles before my teammate came up -- she did some work, charged the rollers, and then moved the line from the right side to close to the middle of the lane. I started moving up on the right, since there was so much room; I quietly announced "on your right" and the young lady to whom I spoke started screaming "rider right! Rider right!" I was surprised at how she overreacted, so I moved in front of her and indicated that I was getting in line again. She told me she let me in because my bike was so pretty. Hey, whatever it takes.
I stayed mid-pack, my teammate was about 10 people ahead. We were pretty dense when we hit the rollers. Then a moto ref buzzed up to neutralize us so the P/1/2s could pass. Whoever was next to my teammate overreacted and leaned into her. My friend leaned back, forcing her to stay upright. Lady freaked out, pushed my friend hard as she tried to escape.
I heard the sickening sound of plastic on asphalt and I looked up to see 2 women close to the shoulder fall, and my 'mate fall into the middle of the road. Moto ref warned the men and they whirred through us safely. I was already off my bike and after the men went through, ran over to help my 'mate.
She'd hurt her back and had a foot trapped under the bike in the cleat; she couldn't move it w/o tweaking her back. Her front wheel was taco'd badly. I unshod her (both feet) and helped her into the SAG vehicle. I made sure she was OK before getting on my bike again.
My group was by then 20 mi. ahead. I rode 2 more miles to the neutral feed zone & helped c_gallagh hand out bottles to other teammates riding through, and didn't regret not finishing for a minute.
My teammate is sore but unbroken. She turned out on Sunday to the Vacaville crit to be part of the cheering squad. She's in good spirits and already planning a TTT in Sept. with us.

Yeah it's definitely one of my favorite courses, comes second to Lodi one.

60 mile Mines Road out and back from Livermore to the Junction Cafe. With Bikingshearer, cccorlew and mililpony. It was my first time out there since the Devil Mountain Double in April.
What a treat to ride Mines Road without Diablo, Morgan Territory and 91 miles in my legs like The Devil Mountain Double, not dreading Hamilton and Sierra was nice to.
The best part was the friends to ride with and the perfect weather.

No, the best part was seeing Dan looking good little more than two months after that nasty Diablo crash. The next best part was Curtis and Dan taking turns babysitting my slow self up the hills - thanks, guys. (Dan let me pace him on some of the flatter parts of the return - I thnk he was trying to boost me ego.) And the final 25 miles of more or less non-stop downhill back into Livermore wasn't bad either.
Simply a great ride and a great day.
Simply a great ride and a great day.
