Saturday the 23rd, we rode from Natomas to Rancho Cordova, then back to Natomas and out around the airport. Good for 70 miles.

Sunday the 24th, we rode from Natomas to Davis and back, good for around 40 miles.

Today I rode from oakland up tunnel down pinehurst and out to danville and back to orinida. My riding buddy wasn't feeling like doing the hills again so we barted back to the O.
Great ride great weather. I'd estimate about 50miles total.

I knew about the first ones, but had plenty until after Page Mill. I didn't know about the one at Russian Ridge (great place for it), and have to admit my brain was not working so well after the extended cooking and forgot about the last ones.

I rolled up OLH for the first time on Sunday and then went part way up Skyline before turning around and going down 84.

I was on-call this weekend, so my available ride time was limited. I was able to get in some short 20 milers, basically from Santa Clara through Stevens Creek, over Mt. Eden, the back. Nice way to get in some miles, especially since I couldn't start until 6 pm.

I didn't go up Montebello, because I wasn't sure how dark it would get by the time I start descending down the hill.

I rode the Paradise Loop on Saturday for the first time. It was interesting. Enjoyed the rollers and took one corner almost a bit too fast. That wouldn't have been pretty, and the embarrassment quotient would have been quite high. Anyway, I think I ended the day with 50 miles.

Also rode with the RBR group on Sunday on a Canada out-and-back (40 to 45 miles?). That was fun to be in a group of 8-10+, definitely enjoyed the paceline, especially the rotational one. Also went up Bunker Hill for the first time. That's now going to be a must-do if I go over to Canada Road the next few times.

After recovering a bit from bit being sick Saturday PM and Sunday AM, I thought a bit of a ride might help me recover faster. I went with a family friend for an MTB ride at Russian Ridge. I was feeling quite weak still but it felt good to be out. Mike, the family friend, is seriously considering getting a road bike now too

Saturday: Mt Hamilton, the back side, and the last climb on the front side again, for 61 miles and 8700' of climbing. Sunday, 51 miles and 5600' in the santa cruz mountains, including redwood gulch.

After church and pancakes at IHOP (at kids' request ) we went to SF to ride bikes in Golden Gate Park. The fog was a really nice relief from the peninsula heat. The two older girls shot ahead while I hung back with Luke who is still getting his legs up to speed. He did like riding up the sidewalk cutout and dropping off the curb... the little daredevil. Afterward the ride we stopped by the local "biker" hangout... Velo Rouge.

I tackled Diablo again this Saturday. It was too damn hot, so I cut it short at the ranger station.

I'd planned to head to Robert's Market and do an OLH/Tunitas/Kings run this morning, but my brain balked at getting up before the crack of dawn two days in a row, so I shut off the alarm and slept in. Got some internet shopping and some cleaning done instead.

Did Diablo on Saturday also. Knew it would be a hot one, so I started at 8:00 w/ a friend. Up S/gate to summit where we did a repeat of the .25 mile wall climb.

Back down to the junction for water refill and then back up to the summit w/ another .25 mile wall climb repeat.

Ughh.

It was getting pretty warm, so we called a morning and descended down. During our descent, I couldn't believe how many people were climbing up in that heat.

Sunday was reserved for yard work and other various chores.

Sunday, some buddies and I took to the dirt (+ a little road) on our CX bikes...from Stevens Creek dam, up Canyon trail, back south along Skyline ridge (Ridge trail, etc.), down Hwy 9/Redwood Gulch and back to the cars. About 3 hours worth but felt more like 6 hours worth of road riding

Riding time was limited this weekend thanks to work, kids' soccer, and a previously scheduled social engagement. I was able to get in a 40 mile loop down towards the Delta on the Yolo side of the river. Unfortunately, it was during the hottest part of the day. Drank 2 bottles of water and 1 bottle of gatorade. I probably should have drunk even more.

Did Mt. Tam Saturday, and wound up with 90 miles and about 6200 feet climbing. It was damn hot that day. Sunday, I attempted to do a recovery ride, with lofty goals of climbing Montebello. However, just 5 miles in, and < 200 feet climbing later, my legs just didn't have any life in them, so I treked back home. Rested my weary legs the rest of the day.

I spent all afternoon looking at used saxophones with a friend so no riding yesterday. Probably a good thing after the Saturday tam heat ride. So today after work will have to make up for it.

Saturday 9/6: Rode from Natomas to Davis. Hung out at the Farmer's market and ate some awesome Popsicles. Then rode home. Ended up being about 35 miles.

Sunday 9/7: Rode the Hole In The Ground trail in Truckee, CA.





Elevation kicked my butt. But it rocked.

Yeah, no riding Sunday after the Tam from hell adventure. I was just gone that day. I guess on the tandem there is a snowball effect. If one person is gone (Ruth ran out of energy), then the other person is exerting harder to compensate, then they run out of energy (Me just before Tam).

I rode cardiac and another hill before it. The one before it was harder than cardiac. The descents were fun! 55 miles, 3000 feet.

This is belated, but two weekends ago I rode down the CA redwood coastline from Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park to Trinidad. I've camped up there for twenty years, but this was the first time I had taken a bike.

The views, as always, were spectacular. But on my bike, I was in the redwoods. From a car, I'm indoors watching TV. BTW, I pulled over across the highway from the bull elk in the second photo to eat a Clif bar. He was already eating, so I figured I would eat with him. But he gave me the stinkeye and began tossing his head around (a hostile gesture), intentionally catching grass up in his rack in the process (preparation for war), so I snapped my picture, climbed back in the saddle, swallowed my Clif bar whole, and considered myself lucky.

The reward at the end: breakfast at Trinidad Bay Eatery, which I highly recommend.

Solo out-n-back Century (101.25 miles) to Livermore from Concord and then back to Concord.

I traveled on some great roads BigBossMan showed me on the "Steel Is Real" ride.

Highlights:

Whipping a U turn on Foothill on the way home and dispensing a band aid to 4 or 5 year old cyclist that had just a a spill. She stopped crying as soon as her daddy put my band aid on her. Priceless.

7 wild turkeys crossed the road right in front of me.

3 nice old Polish people having a beer in Summit Park in Livermore where I turned around to headed home. They were characters, very charming, funny and warm. A little human contact was just what I needed at that point.

no riding for me this weekend, as I've been keeping my wife company in the hospital. We're hoping she gets better soon, and she should be back home this coming week. She had a very bad case of pneumonia, which led to her kidneys shutting down. We're now looking at (basically) permanent dialysis 3 times a week from now on. Hopefully I can squeeze in some time soon to get back on the bike, 'cause I could sure use the distraction from Real Life(tm).

Another trip up Mt. Rose by Reno. I got to the top from Reno, base of HW 431 and had enough. At 8000' up one is welcomed with a nice long section of false flat which destroyed what was left of my will. At the top a couple walking back to their car mentioned they saw me climbing up from the bottom and asked how long it took, 2 1/2 hours.
