I see people riding on the Golden Gate bridge all the time but most cyclist are on one side while pedestrians are on the other. I know how the pedestrians get to there side but how do the cyclist get on the other side to ride?

I live in Daly City so I'd have to drive there but I don't know how to get there. I just moved out here from Texas and I'd like to ride the bridge one day soon. Are there any routes people take from the Presidio area to the bridge and so on in that area? Can you share your routes? Preferably fairly easy routes as Texas is much flatter than NorCal. These hills are killin' me!! haha!

There is another way onto the south end of the bridge from the coastal side. I feel it is better coming from Daly City Like I did once years ago. I will now go and post it on Bikely.com When the cat gets out of my lap.

Done. Look under Daly City to Golden Gate bridge. You surely know a better way to do the south end of the route.

Gary, in case you didn't know -- if you ride during the week from 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM, bikes share the same side of the bridge as pedestrians (the east side). On weekends, holidays, and after 3:30 PM, the west side is open for cyclists.

Hey, I recently moved here from Texas as well.

My buddy and I happened to have our bikes with us when we were going home from the north side of the bridge in mid-July. On a whim, we decided, "Hey, let's bike across (and back)." We parked in a small lot across the road from the "rest area" and headed off across the bridge. It was really foggy that day (when isn't it, really?) and one thing I wasn't expecting was the wind! It's pretty strong, especially with aero spokes. Also, it was also misty (foggy). That, combined with the aforementioned wind, made it especially cold as well. There are mini-bridges that go under the GG bridge that take you from one side to the other.

I'd do it again if I happened to be in the area but since I'm in the south bay, I don't think I'd make a special trip just to do it. If you do go, however, keep an eye out for the Crisis Counseling signs on the bridge that implore people not to jump.

first, you start from the visitors center parking lot, like away from the crowds and youll see a road. there is a fork in the road and take the on eon the right. keep going and that will lead you to the bike side. its this samll narrow path that does a sharp turn before reaching the entrance to the bike lane.

Moobob42 - where from Texas did you mover from? I worked in Dallas but lived up north in Allen. My friend and I did the MS150 and Hotter-n-Hell ride this year. Lots of fun. But these constant hills here in the Bay Area are killer. I really need to get back on the bike and get into shape again.

I go to school in Mill Valley, near SF, but I live in Sacramento. It's a treat to ride in the bay area, beautiful and challenging. Ride the bridge if you get a chance at all, but bring your cold weather gear because the weather there changes on a dime. Also, you might ride the Marin headlands while you're there. It's an awesome climb and if you ride around the back, you can go through one of the coolest tunnels ever.

I went to San Francisco on Monday and rode my bike from North Beach with my girlfriend. We rode across the bridge to Sausalito. We bought a picnic lunch at the deli there, bought a split of red wine...and sat on the seawall in the sun --fighting off the seagulls. It was such a beautiful day. We were going to take the Ferry back, but we opted to ride. Then we changed in the car and went to dinner at the North Beach restaurant...bellied up to the bar...and had a great dinner and chat with locals. At Fort Mason there is a really cool Hostel...to stay for cheap if anyone needed a place to stay. There is nothing more beautiful than a sunny day in San Francisco!!!

I was really confused to see this thread because I knew Gee3 has ridden the Waves to Wine ride the last two years in a row, which involves crossing the crossing the Golden Gate Bridge.

But then I saw the date of the initial post.

Looks like you've figured it out Gee, but if there is anyone else out there with a similar question, I'd recommend taking BART to Embarcadero and taking a nice ride over the bridge using this route: https://trail.motionbased.com/trail/activity/6274959

There are a few climbs to get there, but nothing bad. The real climbing is once you get to Marin!
