Velodrome in Oakland

I am a framebuilder from NY moving back to Oakland (track and Road frames) and I am trying to organize the construction of a track in Oakland or Alameda Point. I have recieved a quote from a track building contractor for $325,000, labor for 10 guys not included. This is for a wooden track indoors ( in a airplane hangar!!) and $295,000 for an outdoor track in treated wood. I think with enough effort we could raise half the money and have the city match the other half, I have spoken with Alameda about who was in charge of having the skatepark built, and I was told it was paid for by the kids who wanted through fundraising!!! I know there are more than enough interested parties in the bay area to get this going, I would like to meet all of you to get this underway.

How about an outdoor track in Concord? Naval Weapons Station would be an ideal place and way cheaper than Oakland or Alameda. Of course if San Francisco gets the Olympics we're going to have a wood track built somewhere near by anyway - maybe you could get that contract.

I am not opposed to that! Have you spoken to someone there about this idea? I am not a contractor, I got those qoutes from a contractor who specializes in velodrome building. Alameda Point is an idea becuase there has been some success with a skatepark that was proposed by some kids and it was built, there is a lot of space, and there are huge airplane hangars.

The Naval Weapons Station is a huge chunk of land in an area that's pretty easy to get to and will soon be turned over to either a developer or the City of Concord - they're still arguing about who's going to get it. There has been some talk about making a sports center but there's little chance of attracting a major name professional team in any sport. The City is hoping for something that will create a lot of tax revenue (like housing but the market's not great right now and it's not a very attractive area either) The velodrome there is my idea, I don't know if it's workable but it's closer to San Francisco than many other Olympic venues are from their host cities so that was my idea for making it work.

Well its certainly worth the effort, I am in contact with Nancy Nadel Oakland assemlby woman to see if I can still raise her suppport, if there is any chance that you can speak to someone there about a land grant that would be the first thing neccessary as we have an idea of how much it will cost. Raising that much money should not be too tough in a bike happy place like the bay area!!! I hope

I'd love to see a velodrome in Oakland, or Alameda, or at the old Concord Weapons depot. But don't try to tie in a connection to the 2016 Olympics when you talk to the Powers That Be, because the SF 2016 Olympics bid is dead. Toast. Extinct. Similar in viability to the infamous Monty Python parrot. ("That parrot wouldn't vroom if you put 4,000 volts through it.")

The USOC (or whoever Peter Ueberoth works for now) pulled the plug on SF's bid earlier this month after the 49ers said they were bailing on the idea of a new Candlestick Park and were taking their marbles (and plans for a new stadium) down to Santa Clara.

alameda is MUCH more centrally located than concord. that's the trouble with the track in san jose- it is so far removed from the rest of the bay area. alameda is very much centrally located, concord is on the farthest extreme, especially when you see where the weapons depot is.
