    Tandem Time Trial

Looking for recommendations for a time trial event in the spring in the Bay area that welcomes tandems. Thanks.

Members of the Santa Rosa Cycle Club have one or more spring and summer time trials up Pine Flat road in Alexander Valley. Each year there is usually a tandem doing this heroic climb. So tandems are welcome. The manager of a bike shop in Windsor is the guy to contact. I helped with the timing in April and times were between 1 h 5 min and 1 h 45 min. Levi Leipheimer is said to have done it in under 46 minutes. Most of the riders start at the Piner HS in Santa Rosa and ride to the start as a warm-up. Then ride back.

The climb is something like 3,000 feet in 12 miles with the steepest pitch being over 15%.

Thanks - looking for something a little flatter and faster for starters!

Check out the Beat The Clock: Help Beat Cancer series put on by cancer survivor Patt Baenen. There are usually more than one TT on Canada Road. My wife and I did this on our tandem in 2005.

Thank you so much - this is perfect! And for such a good cause - I am a strong supporter of events that support cancer research. My captain and I train on Canada - that would make for a great time trial. Hope to see you and your wife there.

Thanks - I don't see that they have yet posted information regarding the 2007 event - I'll check the site later. Do you know the elevation change for the course? The web site only states 3 hill climbs.

It essentially goes north on San Pablo Dam Road (some uphill but not what you'd call a climb) and then south on Bear Creek Road (cyclists call this the three bears) The three bears are tough at speed but not very long... I'd guess less than 600 feet over the whole 16 miles.
