Wow. The last time I saw one of those was when it was on a Fat Chance at White Pine Touring in Park City back in the late 80s.

Oh yeah,it was inside a glass case, near the front door on your right.I didn't bother asking how much he wanted for it.Actually,I may have and I think he snickered. I think there was a NOS Campagnolo Euclid MTB kit in display too. I saw so many stuff I was dizzy.

I think I must have just had a bad experience, because I've only heard good things about Montano Velo, but when I went in there the other day, no one even paid attention to me. I just wanted to know if they had a certain frame in stock in my size. The guy said he was going to go check and would be back in a second, so I just started walking around and looking at all the beautiful bikes. I lost track of time and realized it was like 20 minutes later and went to find the guy, he was just standing around talking to one of his friends. When he saw me coming, he said to his friend sarcastically, "Oh I gotta go check something for this kid" and then reluctantly did it. That pissed me off so I just left even though I was seriously considering buying something there.

I peeked into the window of WrenchScience today (they were closed) and it looks like trouble for the pocketbook. Tons of high end frames, wheels, and other gear.

I just had a great experience at pacific bicycles. The last time I went into one of their stores was ~ seven years ago when they had about 10 shops in the bay area. They sucked big time then. But now they're down to one store in SF and the experience was much different.

Pac bike had the best service out of all the bike shops I visited from big chain store to small local store and took the most care in fitting me to a bike. Clay helped me out for ~2.5 hours. He was willing to let me test ride everything and made sure every bike was set up right before I took it out. No hard sell didn't mind suggesting bikes they didn't have in stock. Gave me plenty of options and left it up to me to make an informed choice. The only bad thing I didn't realize it would take so much time, had class so that made me anxious to get out of there near the end.

+1 for Cyclepath.

I just purchased my first bike in over 15 years from the store in San Mateo a few months ago. Gebhard, the owner, was great in helping me find a good bike and getting me set up.

After the sale, they have been great in answering all of my questions and tuning up anything on my bike that needs taken care of.

I went on a couple of the Saturday shop rides and even though I was a complete newb, they were patient and gracious on the rides.

All in all, they are very knowledgeable and extremely friendly. I highly recommend them.

DD cycles and Bike Nook in SF. DD cycles is in the outer Richmond area around 40th ave and Bike Nook is in the outer Sunset Taraval St & 41st Ave. The guys who run each of the shops are really friendly , helpful and laid back.
Both shops are pretty small but both shops are willing to help you get what ever you need.

City Cycle in SF is one of the best around for getting fitted. Not cheap, but probably well worth it. https://www.citycycle.com/

I had a bad experience at the bike nook. Bought a Torreli pump, decided to return it. Went in the next day. No cross words were exchanged, Said my usual please and thank yous. No arguing with me about a refund. But once they knew I was in for a refund, they showed their annoyance and displeasure and I heard someone mutter A-hole as I left??? This was a long time ago but it still irks me.

I know someone knocked Eden Bicycles earlier in this thread, but I have nothing but good things to say about them.

I bought my newest ride from them, and they went the distance to get me the bike built on time and fit right. They got the whole thing built, from order to fit day, in about 2 weeks. Most of the components had to be ordered, because they didn't stock some things, like the Brooks Swift saddle I wanted. On fit day, the shop stayed open late, till 9pm, getting me ready to go and did not complain one bit. In fact, several employees were present, still working around during this time. Their new location is very clean and attractive. I can't stay away!!

Oh wow that is kind of out of character for them but then again maybe not because I've never returned anything there so I have never seen that side of their personality...sorry to here that you have issues there.

I've like to give props to GoRide Bike Shop in Redwood City (used to be Garner's). Laid back atmosphere, great staff, quick service. I'm an extremely satisfied customer, having bought two MTBs from them, an FS and hardtail, both sweet deals price-wise. Accessories 15% off when you buy a bike, and free service for life. BTW if you're looking for a really good deal on fully suspended 07 Specialized MTBs give them a call quick before they run out!

Shops

Believe it or not, Sports Basement in San Francisco. 5 Experiences 5 stars! last two times they didn't even charge me labor for the work. Incredibly helpful above and beyond. Worst Lombardys on Polk. Repair dept. completely blows, every experience has been horrible. I was ready to jump over the counter and slap the mechanic silly with an inner tube last time I was there. 9th ave cycle is great, I worked there in the 90's when it sucked for 2 days and got fired, I told *^&$%^#* owner where to go. Worked at the old Orinda Spoke & Pedal, thank God that place tanked! The owner was a useless piece of crap. I got stories.
American Cyclery, very good.

Fitting

If you come south there are two great shops for fitting, Mill Vallye Cycleworks on Miller Ave in MV and BIcycle oddessey on Bridgeway in Sausalito. MVC also sells sevens and serrotas while BO sell many high end frames and builds bikes, ask for Tony.
