LOL!
Thanks for the welcome!
The Halloween ride sounds like fun but my 2 kids would probably have something to say about me being gone on their favorite day...and besides...ummm...mountains scare me!
As tprevost said...I'm with her for the Giro!
I just hope there are no dead horses this time...

Hey Dan welcome to the fold,

Both my mother and brother, have been diagnosed with Celiacs and like you I started having issues around college. I have been a pretty noisy pest at local markets and restaurants, getting them to understand what gluten free means. I have a list of over 20 pizza places in the bay area that now serve gluten free pizza and I working on getting a website up that lists all of this information. My dirty secret is that despite, doing this I indulge occasionally, even though it makes me really sick.

Anyhow, with it getting dark earlier, are any of you riding at night? I have been thinking of getting up an hour earlier each morning and going riding, but I really am not a morning person, however I don't feel all that safe riding at night.

Wife and I started riding last August after a 20 year absence from bicycling. Have 1600 miles on the tandem we bought about 6 months ago including a few centuries and some 100K's. Always looking for rides with other tandems or just (relatively) tandem friendly rides in the 50-75 mile range. We live about 50 miles south of San Jose, but will drive up to 150 miles one way for good rides. Older, but not too slow.

Ya know...I just left my second post on the Commuting forum and, when I saw it, I realized how quietly embarrassed I was of my "newbie" status. I've been on here for over a year and I'll probably never post enough to graduate to junior member or whatever's next, so I thought I might as well embrace my position, embarrass myself loudly and get it over with...I might be here for a while.

Hi - I'm Mel, live in SF. Bought a Fuji hybrid about a year ago, before I found this site. Got it mainly with the intention of riding with my (then) 18-month old son through GG Park and *maybe* commute on it one time, from the Sunset to SOMA. And who knows - maybe biking would be another way I could quit smoking?

Since then:
1) Found bikeforums->cyclocross forum and all the cool gear there and immediately thought "...ooh, should've gotten a double cross instead...or the waited for the sale on the fuji cross...or maybe the Jamis..."
2) Saw SF Bike Coalition's "Gas free Fridays" last year and took that as an invitation to try my first commute. Just to prove I can do it....now I commute 1-2x a week (would do more, if I didn't have to drive to the south bay for work every now and then. Or keep the motorcycle battery charged. Or pick up the kid from preschool. or, really, if I didn't smoke so much)
3) Found touring, rec+family forums, goingslowly.com, pathlesspedaled.com, bought a couple RivReaders and thought "...ooh, maybe a Surly LHT, a Chariot trailer, an s-24-O on Angel island with my kid when he's old enough...then one day..."
4) moved from the Sunset to Bernal Heights, from a relatively flat 6-mile commute to a really flat 4-mile trip with just one big hill at the end (Alabama St. Still haven't ridden the whole way up yet. On a good day, I can make the second stop sign.)
5) Forgot which subforums/websites/magazines I read, but am now convinced I need a Redline 925 single speed with moustache bars like they used to sell (not the bullhorns on the current model. Too cool for this old guy.) Maybe slap some stickers on it, a Brooks saddle, a "yes we did it" spoke card...Then I remember that I still live in Bernal and most days I only make it halfway to that second stop sign, even in my granny gear.

Going forward:
1) I'll make it up Alabama one day. Been thinking about doing some nighttime practice runs, just around the top of the hill...a couple loops just to prove I can do it.
2) I'll take my son for a ride in Bernal one day. Even if it's just around the basketball court behind the library. We even got a balance bike ready for him, waiting til he can flat-foot it.
3) I'll quit smoking. Thursday. T-day is D-day. Got the patch and everything - gonna be holed up in LA for thanksgiving, at my parents' house, with the baby, no bike, no car, nothing good on cable. 3-days, with just a dial-up connection. Yup - gonna do it. (You heard it here first - my girlfriend doesn't even know I'm quitting. Won't she be surprised, on lockdown with me for those three days.)
4) I'll finally join the SF bike coalition. Probably right before I move to Berkeley.
5) Also on the list: clipless pedals, a bike fitting, subscriptions to Momentum and Bicycle Times, a folder for my future BART commute, maybe a welding class at the Crucible, or a bike frame class at UBI, neoprene booties for the winter commute (cause I'm serious about it this time)
and - I'll post again. Just not this wordy. I'm really kinda quiet and boring.

Thanks, btw, to everyone who posts ride reports or what they bought. Keeps me inspired.

Great post Mel, you should do that more often

Good luck with kicking the smoking habit - there's no time like the present.

Hi, Mel. That was funny. Yeah, quit smoking. Now. Do it.

I know that hill feeling well. Two years ago, I didn't think I could do what is now routine. Just gotta stick with it. Nice of you to post.

Greetings One and All,
Dane here. I live at the foot of Mt. Diablo. I Ride with the Valley Spokesman. I have been biking forever but only really "hardcore" since April 2009. Have done 8 Metrics and did 82 of 100 on my last two rides where I went for the full. I joined a club so I could enjoy a group ride of over 60 miles w/o all the fees. I am 48. My main ride is a Felt z70; the rest of the fleet is a Novara Pondarosa for hill and dales, a 1988 Fisher Hybrid, 1988 Specialized Allez, and a Echelon and Motobecane in various stages of "completion." Bummer for me as I am 99% sure I fractured a rib MTB last weekend, so maybe my bike projects will get worked on now.

I rarely drive, a definite plus living in Davis! I've been enamoured of recumbent trikes and tandems, but after trying them, went back to my df, a Specialized Dolce Elite. I'm still tempted with a folding bike, for traveling. I'm addicted to Orange Vanilla CarBOOM gel. lol! If you do any DBC rides, I'm usually helping at the registration tables...

We lived here less than a year before we started riding over Cantelow to Pleasant's Valley and out to Lake Solano. That out-and-back was the bread-and-butter of our rides then.

On long rides I plan stops there for water refills and "nature breaks." The county cutbacks haven't affected the cleanliness of the restrooms, thank goodness.

Hi everyone, or "neighbors."

I'm Dom or Dominic and i'm from Daly City California which is 15 Minutes away from San Francisco. I'm 16 Years old and i share my cycling life with 11th grade High School. I'm a road biker, but for 2010 i will be known as a "competitive cyclist" I can't stress enough how much i love climbing and hills. I also love sprinting, fast cornering descents, and long flat stretches. I can be most commonly be seen in the San Bruno Mountains, in South San Francisco (El Camino Real). When the weather is nice or i'm not training for a race my default ride would most likely be Skyline BLVD-->San Andreas Trail--> Sawyer Camp Trail-->Canada Road-->Woodside-->King's Mountain. I ride with a cycling partner who has a red Fuji.

Sometimes i am stopped by random people, and they ask me if i'm a member of BF, so let me know if you're one of the people who has stopped me, or let me know if you have seen me!

I have a Trek 2.1 and my main Outfit is an Astana replica jersey or a Philippines Design Jersey.

Hey there! Competetive, eh? Perhaps I'll see you at races. I'm the one off to the side, usually alone and sitting on the ground, lurking with my camera.

Hey team

Hey team, my name is Saint and I am a Clyde. I live in Fair Oaks on the outskirts of Sacramento and ride on the American River trail whenever I get the opportunity. I try to get in 2-3 rides a week 20-30 miles a ride. I want to do 3 centuries next year (I have never done any) and 3 sprint triathlons (I have never done any); so I hope to see you guys

Yo. I am Colin. I graduated from UC Santa Cruz in June and now I'm living in Sunnyvale. I am a scrawny vegan Cat 3 road racer, specializing mostly in climbing-intensive courses, although I will probably not race very much next year due to lack of training time and motivation. I still enjoy riding and I race CX and XC, but with less competitive edge than road. I also bike-commute to my job in San Jose 2 or 3 times a week. I have posted on NorCal before, but don't think I have ever formally introduced myself. Sup?

Howdy all - I'm trying to get back into the habit of checking in here. Name is Joel and I'm back in CA after a three-year stint in Baltimore for grad school and work (I don't recommend it). Live in San Leandro and work in Oakland. Clyde for life, and I keep making attempts to train more seriously so I can move from sprint tris to at least one olympic dist.

On a related note - I'm looking to do the b-fit-day challenge this year and I'm looking for advice on a goo ~ 34 mile ride within an hour or so of the bay. Suggestions are welcomed, either here or by PM. Thanks in advance.

How about heading up to the hills and doing a loop along Grizzly Peak/Skyline down to Redwood through Moraga/Orinda then up Wildcat and back - that should be close the mileage you were looking for.
