Thanks for the welcome! I misstated one thing in my introduction though.... I was reminiscing about that sold Motobecane and I realized the bike I loved was a Univega that I bought at the old Garners in PA on sale (even more to love). I think it was a 57cm and had been sitting there in the window for ages and a 'serious riding' housemate came home bemoaning that the bike was too big for him and I zipped down and bought it! I did in fact own a Motobecane and I recollect it was a tank and the Univega felt like I had lost 20lbs overnight. That is the bike that zipped me around the bay area riding gems.
Fast forward to today and a Trek 5000 WSD is calling me with its siren song. Again a 57cm on sale with no takers thus far.... I had sworn off road bikes! I had sworn off being a multi-bike mama. I am scared to ride it lest I fall for its nimble ways and find myself gliding the pavement with others instead of ???? Gee, now therein lies the question.
Will she buy the Trek 5000? Will she stay in stay in the hybrid world or cross back over to the light side? She sure wishes she knew because she is obsessing about it big time ;-).

Hello! I am a 24 y.o, fem, Ohioian in Sacto. Moved here in July of '06. Paid more than $3.50 for a gallon for gas about a month ago. Bought my first bike (other than what I had as a teen) 2 weeks ago. I have ridden a total of 18 miles and my a** HURTS! :0)
I ride a Magna something or other. Got it for $65 at Target. I love riding along the American River with my Creative Zen V plus rawk'n in my ears. I have begun riding my bike to work (from some where on Watt to some where off of Arden) and it's all right. I really prefer the American River.
I joined this forum to keep my riding fresh and to keep up with whats up. I am brand-spanking-new to Cali bike riding. . . What do I need to know?!
Thanks in advance and nice meeting you all!

I was taking Caltrain yesterday and some guy converted a Litespeed int oa commuter. rack, fenders, panniers. It actually looked nice.
but you are right, you need a commuter. Have you thought about a CX bike?

Welcome Dorkie (aren't we all ),
The pain in the butt is probably just acclimating to the saddle.
Someone is supposed to be organizing a Sacto/Stockton area ride so you should try meeting up with the BF crew sometime.

Some suggestions:
1. Saddle positioning / bike fit (possibly a different saddle)
2. Padded shorts
3. Assuming #1 is good, it should improve over time.

Wow. Never had so much attention over a pain in my *****! <3
I will play with the tilt and such. I think I may go nab one of those nifty gel saddles too!
Saddle. . . It's weird to use that term when talking about bikes. I am a horse/mule trainer by trade and that's the only time I have ever used the term!
If someone wants to set up an easy ride on the American River. . . I'm game.

Dorkie:
If riding comfort is important, you need to look at Brooks leather saddles. Ask around, especially with long distance riders (e.g. princesszippy, jobob). They'll tell ya....

Yummy seat. I checked the Brook's website and I am wondering if these seats are good for women. I guess I can ask over on the women's forum but if you have collected any data, I'd love to know.

Hey. I'm Jason, from East Bay Area, SF, California (a 30 minute bike ride from Berkeley).
I ride a Giant OCR2 from (I believe) 2004. I've been riding on and off since I was a kid. My first "real" bike was a BMX single speed that my uncle built for me. I have a lot of fond memories of that bike.
Anyway, now I just ride 10 miles daily to and from work (5 miles each way). I'd like to build a fixie/single speed bike.
I'm also starting to gain an interest in longer cycling routes (5 miles is nothing, despite the belief of some of my coworkers ). Are there any random weekday rides? I work for CostCo so I don't get Saturday/Sunday off....

Welcome Jason,
That's a perfect commute, not too long not too short. Seems most of the rides we organize are on the weekends though
Maybe a holiday like Memorial Day on a Monday would work out for a ride you could do.

Okay, I know you have all been waiting with baited breath while I rode dozens of bikes and came home with a, a ......... Jamis Coda Elite! I am loving it although 'we' haven't even had a mile together yet (I picked it up late this afternoon). I have a feeling this is going to be the best bike I have had since the Univega Gran Premio. I like loving my bike and needed to fall in love again. See you on the roads!

Nice bike Felicity. Where is there a Jamis dealer around here? Performance used to sell them but not anymore. See you on the road sometime.
