Two bike shops
 

So here is a background. I switched to compact crank and now I can't use four smallest cog in combination with small chain ring because the chain rubs against the inner big ring. I heard that spacers might do the trick. I called couple bike shops intending to get second opinion and bring my bike for them to do the work.
First I called CALABAZAS CYCLERY. The guy on the phone didn't even let me finish explaining what I wanted, before telling me it's not his problem and hanging up.
I then called Mike's Bikes in Palo Alto. The person on the phone took the time and explained everything to me, and that it was a common problem with compact cranks. I would just have to learn new shifting pattern. Bottom line Mike's Bikes in Palo Alto will have my future business, and recommendations. The Calabazas Cyclery will never have my business, and I will recommend anyone who asks to stay away from them.
I should also mention another great shop Wheel Away Cycle Center in Campbell. I purchased two bikes there, both times experience was excellent. Friendly and knowledgeable staff.
As with any other business customer service is paramount to the success.

+1 for Mike's. I've always had great service there. For retail stuff I also get good service at Bicycle Outfitter in Los Altos.

+1 on Clalbazas. I went in there once and was not impressed. I wont be back. I still have'nt been really impressed with any of the roadie shops Ive been too. Mikes is a great shop, but a bit of a drive for me. Still looking in the San Jose area.

I've heard good things of ST bicycles on Capital Expressway but Have not been to it personally. The Mike's Bikes in Palo Alto is great as well as the one in San Rafael, Marin City, and Sacramento. In Davis, I like Wheelworks and Ken's Bike and Ski.

Bought my bike from ST, but Im thinking that there is something a little out of wack cause the cranks dont spin freely in reverse. Ive checked other bikes aqnd they do so Im wanting to get it checked just to make sure. They also dont have a wide selection since it is now a Trek Superstore.

+2 on Mike's. They did a great job with helping my wife find the right road bike. I don't go there often though since Chain Reaction, Bicycle Outfitters, Bike Spring and Performance are a lot closer to my house. I miss the historical stuff Wheelsmith had when they had their large space in downtown Palo Alto. I can't seem to recall what's at that location right now. Too many bike shops - so little time.

Also I could recommend BikeSpring in downtown Mountain View (they are near Catro/El Camino).
