Memorial Ride Group get together Reports and pics

Okay so Im too tired to write now, but hopefully some of the others will post reports and pics. It was great riding with all of you. What a great day, and congrats to Tracy for doing so well, Brian who did the ride in tennis shoes on flat pedal, and the others that took on a new challenge. Great ride by all.

dauphin 05-26-07 10:11 PM

It was an outstanding ride, Sean....thanks for leading the group up those "tiny" hills...

briank 05-26-07 10:17 PM

Absolutely!! Thanks Sean and everyone.
It was great putting faces to names. I had the time of my life today with this new challenge of biking. Officially met a whole bunch of cool peeps I consider friends. Could not have completed this ride with out all your support and mental encouragement.
I am hecka sore, especially my 2 buns. Pulling up to my house after the ride in my truck, I opened the door, I almost fell out due to leg fatigue.. You guys sure know how to show a greenhorn a good time. I felt comfortable and in great company all day. Looking forward to future get togethers with you all.

Gracias!!

Here's my ride report.

There was a flurry of messages sent the night before the ride, only because the Park and Ride lot didn't really have an address, and looking up mapquest or google maps was just confusing. Gave everyone explicit step by step instructions, and everyone made it to the start (at least the ones who could make it).

There were a few no shows. ME, Asia, both had prior commitments, which made it difficult to complete the ride, and be able to meet those commitments. ME, Asia, you were both missed. Wished you could have made it on the ride.

One rider, who was not with our group, went and then came back. The main route on Arastradero was closed, and would not allow bicyclists even to get through. So immediately, we had to come up with an alternate route. We went down Page Mill, then over to Foothill, then up Alpine, adding another 5 miles to the trip.

We met SesameCrunch at the Texaco gas station on the route (on Portola and Alpine). We then proceeded to climb Old La Honda. It was great! The sun was just starting to break through, so it was time to take off the jackets, but I still left arm warmers on. Took a few pictures on the way up ... those will be upcoming later.

Most of us continued on the longer route, while a few went on the shorter route. Tracy (tprevost), Wayne (VMC), Brian (briank), and Alan (Sesamecrunch) went on the shorter, more direct route. The 7 or 8 faster riders went on ahead on Pescadero, while a few of us (me included), just tried to get into a rhythm, since we didn't have any draft to work off of. The wind wasn't too much of a factor, so that allowed me to maintain a fairly steady cadence.

We got to the Pescadero Bakery, and had some pastries, and just some light food. We didn't want to carry too much with us, as we would have to carry it up the 3 evil sisters on Stage Rd. The climate was overcast, but it wasn't too foggy. By the time we reached the peak on the second evil sister on Stage Rd, we could see the ocean, but since it was overcast, there was a whole lot to see.

We finally met up with the others who took the short route at San Gregorio General Store. They were waiting about an hour, so as you can tell, they were itching to go.

We continued on, finished the third evil sister, then climbed up Tunitas. It was just gorgeous riding through, passing through a redwood forest. 2/3rd the way to the top, the terrain started to level off a bit, and I got my second wind. I then shifted to my middle chain ring, and stayed there till reaching the top.

We then descended King's Mountain, and it was nice! Fast downhill, with some swithbacks and hairpin turns, but banked at enough of an angle that speed wasn't too much of an issue. By the time we got to the bottom, and regrouped by Tripp Rd, we could see all smiles on everyone's faces ... no wonder, we had dropped 2,000 feet in a very short horizontal distance.

We went back and tried to go through Arastradero, which was closed to us in the morning. We were able to go through. The problem was a downed power line, and we were able to squeeze our way through the road. This meant we had the whole road to ourselves (at least for a little while). From there it was back to the cars.

There were a few of noteables on this ride. First, special accolade to Brian (briank). He did the whole ride on a hybrid bike, with noticeably fatter tires, compact double, and on tennis shoes. Brian gets the silver chalace, the rider of the day award. To climb OLH and Tunitas on that, it is an accomplishment. Second, congrats to my co-worker John. He too did the ride on tennis shoes, plus a big fred-like bag mounted on top of his handlebars. You want to see Fred-ness ... he started the ride with a sweatshirt. Third, Andy ... wow, what a character. He did the entire ride on a fixie.

The long ride:
Distance: 68.44
Ride Time: 5:38
Altitude Gain: 6822 feet

Don't have the short ride stats. Perhaps VMC will be able to upload that.

I'm working on it !!!

SesameCrunch 05-26-07 10:38 PM

Nice to have met you all. Thanks to Sean for leading the ride.

Let's do this again on a monthly basis!

backinthesaddle 05-26-07 11:05 PM

Hey gang, I promised to be the "old slow guy way behind" and I sure kept my promise! I won that competition. Next time (if there is one) I hope to ride with more of you in the group.

Good ride, thanks Sean for hanging back with me on Old La Honda, that was my first time up that road that I'd heard so much about.

Tunitas Creek was a real mashdown for me. Somewhere I read that it was a 6% grade. Well maybe on the average counting the first few fairly flat miles. Averages sure can lie.

I clocked about 72 miles. Don't know exactly how much because the battery on my Garmin died within a mile of the finish. Don't know why I clocked almost 4 more miles than Spingineer, don't think I made a wrong turn anywhere.

Very tired now, but not especially sore, and looking forward to some real lightweight riding tomorrow.

Glad to hear ya made it back. How was the ride up Tunitas creek?

SesameCrunch 05-27-07 08:36 AM

I am in awe of guys like Backinthesaddle and Briank who are newbies and were not daunted by this difficult route. You guys hung in there and did a big ride! Hats off to you.

Another hats off to "fixie" Andy. Almost 70 miles and 7000 feet on a 42/17 fixie. Man, I don't know if you're tough, or crazy :D !!!

Thanks to BlastRadius and Sean for a short but sweet paceline down 84! It was fun! Let's do that again!

Awwww.... thanks Sean, it was a great ride and I'm looking forward to doing it again (yes, really :p ). My legs were totally shot at Roberts Market but I managed to limp back (I think at like 11mph  ) I feel okay today though!

John, It was SO great to finally meet you! Thank you so much for joining us; I'm looking forward to riding with you again soon!

I'd like to take the opportunity to say thanks, first to Sean for organizing this, and to the rest of the gang. It was great to finally meet everyone. I wished we could have spent more time riding with SesameCrunch ... thanks for leading the short route down to San Gregario. Sorry we missed you there ... we took a little longer than we thought.

Sean, great to finally meet and ride with you.
UmneyDurak, I am in awe of you. Doing such a tough ride, with basically one arm. That is dedication.
Briank ... what a job, to do this in tennis shoes, hybrid, and a compact double, just awesome. And you have a terrific attitude! :D
Backinthesaddle, it's great to see you persevere with this. I think I see a double century rider born here. Persistence does pay!
Nesdog, you are stronger than you lead to believe. It was great to finally ride with you.
Dauphin, it was great to ride with you. You do exist! Too good a rider for me to keep up with.
Blastradius, man you are just too fast. Riding with you makes me go anerobic.
And finally tprevost and VMC ... you are a hoot!
