Man - you haven't lived until you try to shop for a decent, newish mountain bike. I swear - I never had such a hard time nailing someone down to give them money. No pictures, no sizes, poor communication skills, haphazard approach to actually meeting and selling their bikes. I called on one bike, and he never called back. But the ad keeps expiring and being re listed. I've watched it though 3 cycles - the words change a little bit, but same pics, phone number, and location.
It was a painful 3 week process, but I finally got this guy on the hook long enough to actually meet me and exchange his bike for my cash. But it was nip and tuck, all the way to the wire.
If I never hear the phrases "text me" or "hit me up" again, it'll be too soon.

My Garmin Edge 305 was just causing me problems ... like turning off by itself during the ride. Treated myself to a New Year's present to myself, Garmin 500.

I hear it actually has a screen that alerts you "You seem to be moving. You might want to hit 'Start'" which is a fine idea!

I've been trying to find out the difference between the 305 and 500. Is it just the 500 doesn't have the worthless stuff like unusable "maps" and the "training partner" feature that no one I've ever talked to uses?

I actually use the maps quite a bit on my 705, but I use it as a general purpose GPS unit in addition to a bike computer. Indeed I have never used the Training partner, but I do use the interval workouts. YMMV.

The 305 (I have one) does indeed have something sort of like a "map." It's so pointless that perhaps it is incorrect to refer to it as a map. There is a screen that has some stupid track of where you've been. It isn't good for anything I can figure out. I wonder if that's what was left off the 500. I wouldn't miss it.
I'd love to hear how you use training partner. I've read the directions several times, but I can't figure out how to make it useful. I'd have thought by now some guru would have a blog entry on Training Partner best practices, but I haven't found it yet.
I'd love a 705, and the ability to download maps (like century or double century routes) so as to avoid teh dreaded wrong turn.

One thing of note (or for me the deal killer) is the 500 does not do custom workouts. Esuper lame. I hope they software update that at some point.

Returned my Edge 305 to REI. No problems, no hassles. Got a 500 instead. I don't do the custom workouts, so no big deal. It's got most of the 305 functionality. REI doesn't even carry the 305 any longer. Probably too many returns.
Also, got new Speedplay Zero cleats and some tubes.

The Workouts feature is supposed to come in early 2010 as part of a firmware update.
My 305 has been trouble free since I bought it used in March 2007. Only accidentally turned itself off once while mountain biking... I fell into a bush, a branch pushed the Stop button.
I read this nice review of the Edge 500 this morning: https://dcrainmaker.blogspot.com/2009...th-review.html
Like most I would gladly get rid of the 'training partner' and 'pseudo map' features for an extended battery life and a smaller package. I never used the 'pseudo map', and only used 'training partner' once and didn't really care for it. Now does this thing really hold 18 hours? I would love getting some feedback from a real ride experience.
There's still one issue that is keeping me from upgrading: it doesn't work with Ascent yet. The 500 uses a different file format (.fit) and detailed description of the file format is only been released to developers. I guess it should be implemented in most software within a couple of months.

I just got an email from Ascent, and they now have the SDK for fit format, and they are working on getting this working. They have Garmin 500's, so they are eager to get it working. You'll find the same problem with ridewithgps. You would think they would release the SDK to application developers before they release it to the public ... oh well.
You can always export as tcx file, then import into Ascent as tcx.

I think if you like the Toupe you might prefer the Flite without gel.

I wonder. The classic Flites have always been my favorite. I figured I'd give the new one a try and got a smokin' deal on the gel model. I like the Toupe but it hits the back of my thigh while pedaling. Even though it is the correct width for my butt it begins to hurt my legs after a while. I'll look for a non-gell Flite. Thanks for the tip!

always rides with luggage
I think I am about to order a drop bar, tape, V-brake road levers, and brake cables for my commuter (the Nashbar in my sig). I am pretty sure I have completely lost it. Drop bars on a MTB frame... absolutely nuts.

Put a deposit on a stable mate to keep my Tarmac Pro company; https://www.specialized.com/us/en/bc/...5&menuItemId=0
Dealer in SoCal has it in a 56 for a very good price, probably go down there next month and pick it up once my bonus check hits.

A pair of Michelin Pro3 Race. I hope they will be as good as the Pro2. I tried to find Pro2 but they seem impossible to find.

You can find the Pro2's on eBay. I loved the Pro2's, and used them exclusively. I tried the Pro3's when they came out, and think the Pro2's were a better tire. I didn't care for Pro3's at all, and now use another manufacturer's tire.
