Sacramento Tower Bridge Closure

Does anyone have any new info? Will Nov. 20 be it?

January would suck because I like to take Amtrak home in the rain and need to cross a bridge to get there from West Sac.

I take it you don't like the I St. ride-for-your-life-time-trial section?

What about Yolobus?

I haven't heard about the Tower bridge re-opening being delayed. It should definately be ready by Jan.

Well, it's not too bad on my 27 speed Surly. But when I have that bike, I generally just ride the causeway home unless it's a storm of biblical proportions. But with my fixed gear, a good SW wind can make the ride back to Davis too much like work, so then I like to go downtown and either catch Amtrak or one of the express Yolobuses. My thing with I street isn't so much going up, but going down. The sacto side is sort of like a freeway. And with that, I like to hit freeway speeds.

Well, there's the "rehab special" aka the #42. However, by the time it hits the end of West Capitol, both racks are usually full. And if I catch it earlier, then I'm stuck giving free mental health services to the passengers who can't wait until they get to their counselors in Woodland.

Uh, that would be a delay. What I meant was does anybody know if they will have to close it again in January?

I just talked with the resident engineer of the job. He says the re-opening will happen as scheduled, on 11/20 or 11/21 and the job will be completed by the end of the year (6 months early).

There was never a plan for a 2nd closure.

This is what's on the website:

Quote:
Tower Bridge Closed

September 17 - November 20, 2007

The City of Sacramento Department of Transportation will officially close the Tower Bridge to all vehicle, bicycle and pedestrian traffic from September 17 at 5 a.m. through November 20 in order to safely widen the sidewalks on the lift span portion of the bridge. The bridge will be re-opened before Thanksgiving. These improvements are part of the Tower Bridge Pedestrian and Bikeway Improvements Project. During the bridge closure, motorists are asked to use the Pioneer Bridge (Highway 50) or I Street Bridge, and pedestrians and bicyclists can use the I Street Bridge (see map below).
If the contractor cannot complete the widening of both sides of the sidewalk on the lift span portion during this period, a second closure will be necessary in January 2008.
During the closure, the bridge must be locked in the raised position to accommodate construction on the center lift span and allow watercraft passage under the bridge per U.S. Coast Guard requirements. The bridge will be raised Friday, September 21 at approximately 7 a.m.

Ok, I'll rephrase that: A second closure will not be necessary

On West Capitol? Surely you jest!

Huh. Last I'd heard was that this was going to be closure one of two. But if they don't need to do the second one, that's fine by me.

Of course, if they end up doing the whole trolley thing, they'll probably have to close the bridge for that, but that's several years off.

As caloso pointed out, the second closure would be necessary only if the work was not completed on time during the first closure. They probably did not want to interrupt the holiday season.

I don't know anything about a trolley.

Well put. I went that route when I did my century last month... Whew! My fresh calves were screaming when I rolled into West Sac...
On the return I was at about mile 80 and rode on the sidewalk. No fight left.
