BTW, does your Garmin ever fail to resume recording after it auto pauses? I lost the info between Withers and our regroup at Alhambra Valley Road. The darn stop watch icon that confirms recording is so small I can't really see it when i ride. I think my next cycling glasses will have to be bifocals.
Anyway, i wonder if I'm somehow hitting a button when i stop, which seems unlikely.

Here are the settings I have:
Garmin: Training/Auto Pause-Lap: Custom Speed, 2 m/h, Auto Lap Trigger Off.
Ascent: Preferences/Advanced/Auto-split activities during sync if inactive period found: On/Auto-split inactivity threshold: 300 minutes.
My unit never stopped by itself (except once when falling into a bush with mountain biking, a branch pushes the start/stop button). I read about some units doing so though and it might be a default in some units where a contact gets loose in the battery compartment. It is usually due to shaking, so try putting the unit on your bike and ride on bumps. If it happens again I would call Garmin and get a replacement unit.

At the Briones stop I mentioned a setting for inactive time. I actually was confusing it with a setting in Ascent.

Got it.
What's weird is that it stops recording only when I stop, not if I hit a bump or something. Then it doesn't resume when i start moving.
But I'll do tests....

Thanks Paula for setting this ride up. And thanks to George for leading the ride for the rest of us. It was a great ride and with some great people.
I ended the day with 84.3 miles. The trip home from bart was as nice as I imagined it would be because of all the downhills and the wind on my back. You know things are going great when you can softpedal to 20 mph on a slight uphill parts of the road.
Anyways, not much to add here except for some pictures.

Thanks for the photos. In my family I'm the photographer, so there aren't many photos of me. Kinda nice to see some. Though you did make me look fat and slow. You need to work to your photo skills....

Next time you'll have to let me know which side is your thin side before the rides.
That way I'm prepared.
