Grandma and Grandpa lived in Trinidad; my brother and I found miles of paths and roads... look and ye shall find!

Here in Antioch, Black Diamond Preserve is a good local jaunt

In the Chico area, there is also a park, and in the Sierra foothills, miles and miles of logging roads.

I'm in McKinleyville, but I ride road. I did the Kneeland downhill that hits bottom of couch a couple months ago, which is fun; pretty fast & lots of water bars. There is lots of riding up here, but you wanna make sure it's cool first...you gotta be careful about whose land you're on, lest you be greeted face to face with a 12 gauge, or worse yet...angry lumber company officials...
Hang out at revolution cycles, they'll set you straight, or go to Clam Beach Inn, have a pint and wait for Downhill Dave to show up, it's never long...

Considering the rural, natural setting of Arcata, you would think there would be more extensive trails and fireroads within riding distance and accessible to the public. Not to take the community forest for granted (it's a treasure), but it does get a little old.

I have heard there's a nice downhill that starts from "the rock(?)" atop Fickle Hill and ends near the fish hatchery in Blue Lake. However, it might run across lumber company land.

there's a few routes down from fickle/kneeland, and not everything on lumber land is sketch; there's definitely lots that's kosher too.
